In 2020, an alliance was formed between Vector and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to co-develop a cloud native data platform: Diverge. This team has evolved to become Vector Technology Services (VTS); a subsidiary of Vector, New Zealand's largest distributor of electricity and gas.
Through our strategy of delivering commercially valuable cloud native platforms that solve real problems right now, while primed for rapid evolution in the future, we work to deliver on our vision of creating a new energy future with the following considerations:

About the role
Due to continued success, we are on the look out for another Software Development Lead to join us on our new energy future mission. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to move towards a people leadership role and who has a keen interest in building a great engineering culture. You will spend approximately 70% of your time writing code and working within a delivery squad, and the other 30% mentoring senior, intermediate and junior engineers.
You'll learn from, and be inspired by, our team of software developers in our energy revolution and at the same time you will:
- Use your advanced software development skills to build software - primarily in Java, but also at times with frontend frameworks like React, and infrastructure automation with Terraform
- Mentor and develop high-performing engineers 1:1s, coaching, and providing professional development opportunities
- Act as a communication channel between developers, squads and teams
- Grow in your role and in your career, collaborating with leading global partners such as AWS to build valuable software systems for a global customer base
- Work in a stable, product-focussed agile team and have a voice in what we build, and how we build it
- Learn (and teach) how to use TDD, BDD, and automated application deployment for effective software delivery
- Gain experience with AWS services like Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, and more
- Help to improve the developer experience at VTS.
Who are we looking for?
You will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
- Software development experience: advanced knowledge in Backend programming with Java and Spring, OR frontend programming using ReactJS
- An interest in caring for people, improving the working experience for software developers and decision making within a team.
- A hunger to solve problems and learn!
Bonus points if you come with or have an understanding of the following (although we are happy to teach these).
- Leadership or mentoring skills / experience
- Cloud computing and AWS Skills – AWS services like Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, and more. Understanding how to architect and implement serverless solutions using AWS.
- DevOps / CICD - Knowledge of DevOps and CI/CD Practises including how to use tools for continuous integration and continuous delivery
Why VTS?

The Diverge Platform

What We Do
We are New Zealand's largest distributor of electricity and gas, owning and operating networks which span the Auckland region. But we don’t stop here - our reach extends to Australia and the Pacific Islands, shaping a new energy future for our customers, through innovative digital and engineering solutions, metering services, solar energy solutions, electric vehicle (EV) networks, high speed internet fibre, air and water purification to name a few.
We haven’t been afraid to challenge the status quo. As leaders of the transformation of the energy sector, we know the ‘same old’ just won’t cut it. We have the confidence to forge new solutions and for our people to work differently, to think differently. We have collaborated with global technology companies and thought leaders who share our view that innovation and digitalisation are key to meeting the future needs of energy systems and fast-evolving customer demands. As governments, businesses and consumers urgently take action to decarbonise, at Vector we are clear on our vision – creating a new energy future.
Because we live in a world that is changing fast, we must continue to identify and develop better options that will provide value, choice and service for our customers throughout New Zealand and beyond, so the environment and communities we love continue to thrive. To do this, Vector has a vision of creating a new energy future, which will help to deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy solutions for customers.
