JOB DESCRIPTION:
As a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) at CNA, you are responsible for designing, developing, and executing comprehensive test plansensuring our software applications are efficiently tested and delivered with the highest quality standards. In this hands-on role, you embrace an automation first mindset to tackle and solve complex testing challenges efficiently and proactively. You work closely with developers to understand the code under test and collaborate closely with other testers, Release Train Engineers, Architects, and Product Owners in the delivery of robust, dependable software.
The highlighted requirements are 3+ years of experience developing automation test scripts on a variety of frameworks and tools to include Selenium, Cucumber, PlayWright, Cypress with Java, Python, and JavaScript/TypeScript. Strength in communicating at all levels of the organization is an expectation for the successful incumbent coupled with Commercial insurance experience (Property & Casualty).
This hybrid position will work from the office in Chicago, IL
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in all phases of the agile development process, including planning, refinement, review and retrospectives.
  • Follow BDD and TDD practices within the development cycles, ensuring robust test coverage and integration with overall development efforts.
  • Collaborate with developers and product teams to understand requirements and translate them into effective test plans.
  • Design and implement automated test scripts using industry-standard tools and frameworks (e.g., Selenium WebDriver (w/Java), WebdriverIO, Cypress.io, PlayWright).
  • Efficiently execute automated and manual testing across various platforms and devices.
  • Engage closely with developers to derive needed understanding of code under test.
  • Analyze test results, identify defects, and report them through effective bug tracking systems.
  • Develop and contribute to automated testing frameworks and tools
  • Stay up to date on the latest testing methodologies and technologies.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the testing process and infrastructure.
  • Leverage all available tooling inclusive of Generative AI capabilities, Test Data Management, Test Data Fabrication capabilities to maximize testing efficiency.
  • Actively engage, partner and collaborate with others in the Quality Community of Practice.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Practical experience with BDD and TDD frameworks and principles.
  • Solid experience and expertise leveraging automated testing across frontend, API or data to drive high quality delivery at speed.
  • Solid understanding of the Testing Pyramid with an automation first mindset.
  • Proven experience with programming languages such as Python, JavaScript/Typescript and Java.
  • Experience with relational databases like Oracle, Postgres or non-RDBMS like Mongo DB.
  • Experience working in Scaled Agile Framework environment (SAFe) supporting product-based software delivery preferred.
  • Experience working with Agile tools like JIRA or Rally
  • Good understanding and experience of working with cloud capability providers like AWS, GCP etc. (GCP desirable).
  • Exposure to DevSecOps platforms like GitHub, GitLab etc.
  • Excellent communication,collaboration,and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Analytical mindset with a strong attention to detail.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • Typically, 2+ years of application delivery experience inclusive of testing and development.
  • Minimum of 1 year of solid scripted test automation experience supporting frontend, API or data.
  • Insurance Domain experience is a plus but not required.
