Main purpose of the role:

The Social Performance team is in charge of defining, implementing and reporting on all the Socio-economic development contributions made by the company and its projects for community development (Local community trusts, Project SED spends etc.).

The Social Performance Manager will be responsible for ensuring that project-level stakeholder engagement processes during operations is implemented in a planned, proactive and strategic manner , so that community risks are avoided and managed and relationships with beneficiary communities are constantly improved.

This Manager is also responsible for managing the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project-specific socio-economic development (SED.EnD) programmes, primarily during operations, that are built on strong relationships and built into a strategy for long term sustainable and transformational impact.

An important element of this is ensuring that the programmes meet the specific requirements of the REIPPPP commitments, and associated contractual requirements.

Key responsibilities:

Renewable energy plants in operation

Oversee the implementation of the Company’s Community Investment programs (SED/EnD) programs associated with its operational renewable energy projects. This includes the management of the external implementing agents appointed to implement, monitor and reports on Community Investment projects funded by the company.

This responsibility includes and is not limited to:

Stakeholder engagement:

In collaboration with the Principal stakeholder manager ,

  • Develops project specific stakeholder engagement plans (“SEP”) aligned to the company’s stakeholder management policies including but not limited to: Mapping of stakeholders, developing site specific grievance mechanisms, identification of key partners (NGOs , government etc) , determining the impact of stakeholders on the projects and developing mitigation strategies aligned to such.
  • Responsible for overseeing the implementation and maintenance of the community grievance mechanism (formal process and structure) at each project and ensuring that all grievances are addressed and closed out as per the project commitments
  • Responsible for ensuring that accurate records (presentations, minutes, attendance registers etc.) are maintained of all stakeholder meetings and ensuring that the records have been collated and saved on the company’s online systems.

Program Implementation:

  • Responsible for the design, management, implementation and monitoring of a long-term community investment (SED & End) strategy that effectively addresses community needs\
  • Provides directions to the IMA i stakeholders necessary in implementing successful initiatives and manages these relationships
  • Prepares yearly SED & EnD implementation plans that describe the initiatives to be undertaken, the activities and the budget required for the next twelve months and ensure that these plans are shared with the requisite stakeholders, ensuring submission thereof to the Department of Energy as per deadline
  • Manages compliance with requisite contracts entered into with service providers and/ or beneficiaries
  • Manage the implementation of local procurement, enterprise and supplier development processes in the host communities
  • Forecasts, budgets and tracks SED & EnD spend on a quarterly basis
  • Ensures that the team engages regularly with beneficiaries to gain relevant information regarding the initiatives and to monitor their impact

- IPPO/BBBEE and other reporting:

  • Assists the SED reporting analyst with any information and data gathering for REIPPPP ED reporting, as required
  • Responds to any ED reporting related queries raised by various stakeholders, as and when required
  • Experience in BBBEE audit (clear understanding of BBBEE verification)
  • Assists in managing and coordinating the annual ED audits
  • Responsible for reporting on relevant SED and EnD projects
  • Responsible for providing timeous reporting to all other areas of the business, including reporting to external stakeholders, boards and so on.

Renewable energy plants under construction:

  • Finalize all preparatory work and community consultation processes initiated by the Company in order to devise meaningful community developments plans ahead of the start of operations (Social Performance and Skills Transfer). This includes but is not limited to the following deliverables which may be outsourced
  • Community Asset mapping
  • Community Consultation and Needs Analysis
  • Identification of potential SED/EnD programs to be funded.

Renewable energy plants preparing for Financial Close:

  • Responsible to ensure Projects are compliant with IFC Performance Standards (in particular IFC PS 2, 4, 5, and 7) and/or with lenders and sponsors requirements.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Implementation Department in order to adapt all the policies, procedures that will be applicable to the Project during its construction phase with regards to Job Creation and Local Procurement.
  • Provide inputs in the social section of Project ESMS.
  • Procure social performance assessment of host communities.

ENVUSA Social Performance:

  • Collaborate with Anglo American Social teams to develop the Social Performance policy that will be applicable for the joint venture Envusa Energy.
  • Provide comments and validate the proposed Social Performance plans associated with captive sites located near an existing mine.
  • Managers and supervisors carry both legal and company responsibilities for ensuring the health and safety of their employees, those under their control, and those who might be affected by the work undertaken, i.e., public, visitors and employees of other organizations. This includes ensuring risk assessments are conducted and mitigation measures are clearly communicated and understood by individuals. Managers must also ensure that individuals have the necessary understanding, competence, and application of requirements to work safely and without harming the environment.

Health & Safety Responsibilities:

Employees are responsible for ensuring they fully understand the health and safety risks involved in their work activities and their responsibility to apply the controls needed to manage those risks to acceptable levels. Similarly, where work activities can have an adverse impact upon the environment, and particularly where there are legal requirements, employees are responsible for understanding those impacts and the controls they must ensure are applied.

Qualifications and certifications

Must-have Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, Business Administration or Social Economics.

Relevant Experiences

Must-have years of professional experiences: 

  • Minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in Social Performance or Economic Development preferably in the renewable energy industry, but not limited to.

Preferred years of industry experiences:

  • Renewable Energies experience is preferred.

COMPETENCIES

Technical competencies:

  • Understanding of the International Finance Corporation (IFC)- Performance Standards and Compliance on social aspects.
  • Fair understanding of social requirements in the REIPPPP and Mining Charter (Bonus).
  • Financial and Legal literacy.
  • Good reporting and writing skills.
