THE ROLE AND THE TEAM

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be part of an expert team of software engineers and applied scientists working towards keeping the delivery time promise for all Zalando customers. Your focus will be the design, development, and improvement of a core software system that drives algorithmic order prioritization and fulfillment optimization in all Zalando warehouses. In this role, you will face three significant challenges: ensuring the system adheres to the latest software engineering standards, gaining a comprehensive understanding of order processing systems to identify opportunities for improvement, and ensuring the software design supports the integration of complex multi-objective algorithms.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

•  Take ownership of the design and implementation of our software framework to cater for the increasing scale and load, and be the driving force behind its success.

• Deliver end-to-end solutions and set the standard for the entire development cycle, including requirement engineering based on deep domain & business understanding, prototyping, implementing production software, as well as testing and operating the highly available production system.

• Collaborate closely with our applied scientists to mutually influence and understand system constraints and opportunities, and take part in shaping the future of our system.

• Think abstractly and discover correlations between problems, methodologies, and solutions.

• Promote and support an inclusive culture and diverse team environment, fostering a positive and productive work environment for all team members. 

WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

•  You have ~4 years of relevant industry experience in developing for Java/JVM-based platforms, with a strong understanding of mathematical and computational concepts.

• You have hands-on experience in microservice architecture and patterns, Spring Boot, REST, Kubernetes, architecture documentation, data and API specifications (e.g. OpenAPI), quality assurance and testing methods. Proficiency with Kotlin is considered a plus. 

• You approach software design strategically and aim for reducing complexity, producing easy to maintain designs always keeping in mind the business objectives.

• You’re excited about working in a setup that requires a deep domain understanding (e.g., how our logistics order processing works), basic mechanisms of our optimization algorithms, as well as operations research methods.

• You’re a team player who thrives in an agile and cross-functional environment, and is passionate about fostering a positive and productive work environment.

• You are fluent in English.
