The Opportunity
As a Sr. Manager of Engineering, you will help lead Kargo’s programmatic auction platform and manage a distributed engineering team that is responsible for two missions: 1) Develop features to support product development for Kargo’s GTM strategies. 2) Perform experimentation to maximize revenue for Kargo’s network of premium publishers. You will be responsible for training, recruiting, and developing your team’s skill-sets and will be successful if and only if your team is successful. As a manager, it is your day to day responsibility to ensure that the team is psychologically safe, positive, productive, and most importantly - always learning and improving.
You should be comfortable working alongside your team members, Product Manager(s), and cross functionally with other engineering teams to solve business problems. Ultimately, you will shape, define and improve our SDLC, Agile processes, engineering best practices to promote excellence to the organization.
The Daily To-Do
- You will help bring our large-scale distributed infrastructure responsible for running our programmatic advertising platform to enterprise grade.
- You are a seasoned software engineer who writes clean and effective code that understands when to incur or pay off tech debt.
- You are expected to be a teacher that provides ample context to your team about company priorities and will set expectations and goals for the team that will contribute to the success of the organization.
- You are a product engineer by trade that uses code as a tool to solve business problems at hand.
- You will be responsible for the project delivery of your team’s quarterly commitments, ensuring resources are deployed correctly, especially for time sensitive projects.
- You will be responsible for the alignment of the engineers to company goals, ensuring high engagement, and consistent productivity. Keeping them excited about the work will be a priority.
- You have a strong understanding of software design, DevOps practices, and agile methodologies to develop guidelines and best practices with the team to elevate team performance.
- You are expected to develop Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) within the team that possess strong analytical skills that can quickly troubleshoot and fix production bugs in conjunction with the Technical Services team.
- You will iterate on current practices, encourage new ideas with the team, and measure the effectiveness of the improvements achieved.
- You will participate in the team’s on-call rotation to cover platform outages and revenue impacting escalations.
- You will participate in architecture planning, perform code reviews, and encourage a learning culture of knowledge sharing & documentation to prevent knowledge silos.
- You are expected to identify and coach future leaders in your team, advising their career growth within the organization.
- You are expected to perform regular 1:1, conduct performance reviews, and provide timely and actionable feedback to your team members to ensure expectations are met.
Qualifications
- B.S or higher in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics (or equivalent work experience).
- At least 10 years of experience working in the Software industry or a related field.
- At least 3 years managing a team of engineers, with a knowledge of how to perform 1:1’s, give feedback, and manage performance.
- At least 2 years of ad tech experience focused in programmatic advertising, fluency in concepts like pacing, auction mechanics, and traffic shaping is a major plus.
- Experience with Prebid.js and Prebid-Server integration is a major plus.
- Experience with DSP integration and fluency in OpenRTB protocol is a major plus.
- Strong portfolio (i.e. Github) demonstrating past work experience.
- Strong knowledge in Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), QA, DevOps best practices.
- Experience in using a data-driven approach to guide conversation and decision making.
- Experience in mentoring junior developers through code reviews, pair-programming, and whiteboard sessions.
- Expert in either Go, C++, or Java in large-scale distributed systems.
- Experience working in a Dockerized Kubernetes environment across multiple clusters on AWS is a major plus.
- Ability to take a hypothesis from a brainstorming phase, to experimentation, and into production with architecture plan, testing process, and development phases.
- Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively to technical and non-technical audiences in written, verbal, and presentation form.
