Position Summary:
Samsung SDS America (SDSA) is seeking a Linux Virtualization Engineer – Technical Lead at our Samsung Austin R&D Center (SARC). This role sits within the SARC Infrastructure Part and plays a critical part in supporting and modernizing the virtualization and Linux infrastructure used by over 600 engineers in the development of world-class semiconductor products.
As a Technical Lead, you will guide the direction and design of core infrastructure services related to virtualization, Linux operating systems, backup, storage, and automation. You will work closely with stakeholders and cross-functional teams to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performance solutions, while also mentoring team members and supporting escalated issues.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and hands-on technical expert, with a passion for Linux systems, automation, and optimizing infrastructure at scale.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership
- Lead technical direction for Linux and virtualized infrastructures within the SARC Infra Part team.
- Mentor junior team members and provide guidance on best practices, system architecture, and troubleshooting.
- Act as the escalation point for complex infrastructure issues and incidents.
Infrastructure Design & Support
- Design, implement, and support Linux server environments (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu), ensuring performance, security, and availability.
- Manage VMware vSphere environments including host management, vCenter administration, storage configuration, and VM provisioning.
- Own backup and recovery strategies leveraging tools like Commvault, Veeam, or equivalent solutions.
- Support high-availability infrastructure components such as DNS/DHCP (Infoblox), file systems (NFS, DFS), and authentication services (SSSD, LDAP, Active Directory integration).
Automation & Innovation
- Develop scripts and automation tools to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort (Bash, Python, Ansible, etc.).
- Identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement in system architecture, monitoring, and reliability.
Operations & Process
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical services.
- Collaborate with service desk for escalated incidents and documentation of operational runbooks.
- Follow ITIL best practices for change management, incident response, and problem resolution using tools like Jira.
Project Management
- Lead infrastructure-related project workstreams, including migrations, upgrades, and service expansions.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, propose solutions, and drive successful project delivery.
Core Responsibilities:
- Administer and harden Linux systems across production and development environments.
- Engineer and administer VMware vSphere hosts, clusters, data stores, and performance tuning.
- Support storage services including NFS, SMB, DFS, and storage tiering where applicable.
- Monitor and respond to system alerts using enterprise tools like SolarWinds or equivalent.
- Maintain backup policies, job schedules, and perform recovery operations as needed.
- Collaborate with internal security teams on vulnerability remediation, patching, and compliance.
- Document infrastructure designs, SOPs, and troubleshooting guides for internal use.
- 10+ years of enterprise IT experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in Linux administration and infrastructure management.
- 3+ years in a technical leadership or mentoring role.
- Strong working knowledge of VMware vSphere environments.
- Familiarity with backup solutions and data recovery planning.
- Scripting/automation experience (Bash, Python, or Ansible).
- Experience with authentication services and directory integrations (e.g., RHEL SSSD, Kerberos, AD).
- Solid understanding of network concepts relevant to infrastructure (TCP/IP, DNS, VLANs, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience managing or designing VMware Horizon VDI infrastructure.
- Familiarity with Commvault, Veeam, or other enterprise backup platforms.
- Proficiency in Infoblox DNS/DHCP/IPAM solutions.
- Experience supporting distributed file systems and storage platforms.
- Exposure to configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
- Working knowledge of security compliance standards and vulnerability management.
- Experience supporting containerized environments (Docker, Podman, Kubernetes – nice to have).
- Familiarity with Jira and Confluence for Agile planning and documentation.
- Microsoft Active Directory experience, especially integration with Linux platforms (RHEL SSSD)
- Experience with cross-domain or forest authentication and Microsoft AD integrations.
- Experience leading high performing teams in a technical lead capacity, providing direction or mentorship to peers
