Position Summary

Why join our team?
We are a small team dedicated to Samsung’s fast-growing (and even faster-paced) European Services Business Office (“ESBO”) business unit! We see ourselves as part of the business, helping to facilitate its extraordinary growth, whilst protecting it from legal and regulatory risk. It is a highly challenging, but extremely exciting, place to work.
You be responsible for all media regulation & compliance work across Europe for ESBO, providing advice (and co-ordinating advice with colleagues) across the whole spectrum of media law – including laws and regulation relating to connected TVs, mobiles, gaming – and more!

Role and Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities

  • Being responsible for navigating legal and regulatory risk, particularly in the connected TV, streaming, advertising, ad-tech, app distribution, mobile and gaming space.

  • Collaborating with colleagues in the pan-European and local public/government affairs and legal teams across Europe to proactively understand and advise on pan-European and local laws that apply (or will apply) to ESBO, building systems and processes for us to be “kept in the know” on new laws and regulation as and when they arise.

  • Working with the ESBO business, proactively creating practical solutions and/or mitigations where laws and regulation necessitate change to current practice.

  • Building and maintaining a record of all advice received and given, enabling questions to be easily answered when asked. Drafting and maintaining guidelines, training materials, briefing documents etc. so that all relevant ESBO collaborators are aware of our obligations and what they need to do to align with them.

  • Reporting on your work to senior members of the EO Legal team, as well as senior collaborators within in the business (including ESBO’s LT led by its SVP), and proactively actioning feedback / building the same into your roadmap.

  • Collaborating with colleagues across the EO Legal team and the business (e.g. Sales, Finance, Tax, BizOps, Business Development/Partnerships etc.).

  • Collaborating closely with and instructing various external law firms and specialists with whom we work and managing the costs associated with the same.

  • Representing Samsung at external meetings (e.g. with Ofcom in the UK).

  • Coordinating responses to RFIs from European and local regulators.

  • Actively contribute to your own development and to the development of the lawyers and paralegals within the EO Legal team.

What we need for this role

To be successful, you will possess the following skills and attributes:

  • You get things done quickly – and have an ability to jump between different tasks and topics at pace. You see yourself as a true business partner and adviser, and not as part of a legal “no” function. You take ownership and require very little supervision or hand holding.

  • You are patient, pragmatic, flexible and detail focused. You are culturally aware and able to communicate legal issues in clear and concise terms that are easily understood. You work under your own initiate and are a key enabler, allowing ESBO to achieve its objectives and targets.

  • Excellent issue spotting and analytical skills are required, as is experience advising on all aspects of media law. You need to be able to work, influence and provide guidance to individuals at all levels of the organisation (including very senior team members), being cognisant of cultural differences.

  • You must be a qualified solicitor in the UK or similar jurisdiction, e.g. Australia. The role would suit candidates with significant years PQE (although all candidates with relevant experience are encouraged to apply) who want to “take ownership” and make an immediate and lasting impact in one of the fastest growing areas of Samsung’s business.

What does success look like?

In the first year, you will proactively engage with and build close relationships with all relevant collaborators – in particular within ESBO, and with the pan-European and local public/government affairs and legal teams across Europe.

Begin promptly, lead, and analyse ESBO laws including UK Media Act and equivalent laws in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. You will successfully delegate work to, and work closely, with our paralegal, particularly in connection with building and maintaining a record of all advice received and given.

Keep the business informed of necessary actions in line with legal developments. You will collaborate with the wider EO Legal team, and present at team meetings on interesting matters you are working on and/or topics relevant to ESBO, regularly seeking feedback from your peers and stakeholders, and proactively act on the same.

You will be a true business partner, helping ESBO to achieve its goals and targets, whilst managing legal and regulatory risk.

The interview process

There will be two main stages of the interview process.

In the first interview, you will meet with the hiring manager and a member of the ESBO team, who will ask you a series of questions about yourself / why you want to work for Samsung (this may include some behavioural questions).

In the second interview, you will meet with the hiring manager and a member of the EO Legal and/or HR team, and will be asked to share your thoughts on a technical exercise that will be provided on the day. The technical exercise will include real examples of the types of work we do for ESBO. We may also ask you some additional questions about yourself / why you want to work for Samsung (this may include some behavioural questions).
