Senior Grid Connections Engineer
Reports to: Grid Connections Manager
Department: Sales Engineering
Fluence is a global leader in energy storage solutions, transforming how renewable energy integrates into electricity systems. As a Senior Grid Connections Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the seamless integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) within Australia.
In this critical role, you will be involved throughout the project lifecycle—from pre-sales and pre-NTP (Notice to Proceed) activities to commissioning and R2 testing—contributing to the successful delivery of projects. Your expertise will be essential in navigating grid connection requirements, ensuring compliance, and optimizing system performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess BESS solutions for compliance with NER generator performance standards.
- Oversee and review grid modelling studies conducted by third parties, providing troubleshooting and technical support.
- Perform preliminary modelling and assessments, including MATs, to enhance grid connections.
- Prepare and manage essential R1 and R2 documents, technical information, and project-specific documentation.
- Work closely with design teams to develop key design elements affecting grid connections, including voltage control strategies and plant performance curves.
- Review and refine BESS and BoP designs to ensure GPS and Registration compliance.
- Contribute to the Global Product Management Group with technical insights and support.
- Design and negotiate R2 Testing regimes for each project, ensuring thorough performance evaluation.
- Collaborate with commissioning teams to facilitate timely and effective R2 Testing.
- Engage with internal teams, customers, consultants, and regulatory bodies to ensure successful grid connections. This includes attending meetings and providing detailed progress updates.
- Support technical teams in maintaining and updating proprietary PPC and OEM dynamic models.
- Travel to project sites as required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Conduct feasibility and locational studies using dynamic and grid models to identify and assess opportunities.
- Assist in qualifying and validating new inverter models, ensuring GPS compliance.
- Support modelling activities across the Asia-Pacific region.
- Work alongside technical teams to develop innovative PPC solutions.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering.
- Registered or Certified Professional Engineer (RPEng or CPEng) is highly valued.
- Experience leading and managing consultants and designers in sales, design, and construction/commissioning phases.
- Experience with tier-one companies is highly regarded.
- Strong expertise in reviewing grid connection compliance designs.
- Extensive experience with NEM grid connections, particularly in BESS GPS and Registration.
- Proficiency in generator and power systems modelling, with specific experience in modelling BESS assets.
- Strong knowledge of PSS/E, PSCAD, and PowerFactory software.
- Experience in developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting PPC and OEM dynamic models.
- Knowledge of substation electrical design is beneficial.
- Proven ability to negotiate with key stakeholders, including clients, consultants, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
