Description of role:

The Senior Engineer is responsible for developing and delivering innovative research projects on behalf of TWI’s industrial members. They will contribute to the core skills of an established team of scientists and engineers by taking on responsibilities such as management and research projects, and consulting with clients to understand industry needs, interpretation and explanation of experimental findings, and writing high quality reports.

Project activity will focus on the evaluation of polymeric material performance with respect to permeation and ageing. Testing is typically under bespoke conditions requiring advanced simulation of aspects of in-service conditions. The Senior Engineer is required to work with senior technical specialists, laboratories and customers to ensure the successful delivery of projects.

Key accountabilities

• Managing projects within agreed budgets and timescales
• Defining processing and characterisation work to be completed, and analysing the results
• Producing high quality reports and/or research papers arising from project work
• Responding to technical enquiries from clients with clear, accurate, comprehensive information
• Visiting clients, presenting to clients, and hosting client visits to TWI
• Identifying and developing business opportunities
• Understanding customers’ requirements, accurately costing the effort required and writing detailed, high-quality proposals and project reports
• Working with colleagues to bid for publicly funded research projects
• Maintaining and developing own technical expertise and reputation.

Security requirements: BPSS is desirable.

Travel:

This position may require regular travel both in the UK and abroad.
