Scottish Power’s Drawing Office is expanding with the creation of two new teams to meet growing business demands, and we are seeking a Senior Engineer (Drawing Office) to guide these efforts.

As a team leader, you will coordinate a team responsible for developing and implementing engineering drawing solutions for Transmission Network Projects (132kV and above). Your leadership will be crucial in ensuring the team’s success and adherence to high standards.

We are looking for individuals with diverse skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Civil/Substation Layouts Design - Drawing Production

  • Cable Route Design - Drawing Production

  • Overhead Lines Design - Drawing Production

  • Electrical Protection and Control – Drawing Production

This role will draw on your key skills of engineering drawing creation and people management.

What you’ll be doing

  • Preparation of Drawings: Developing both feasibility and detailed design drawings for complex transmission / distribution projects.

  • Compliance: Ensuring all team members prioritise health, safety, quality, and environmental standards.

  • Workload Management: Administering the team’s allocated workload efficiently.

  • Information Gathering: Collecting relevant information to produce accurate drawings.

  • Standards Promotion: Communicating and encouraging the use of drawing standards and procedures.

  • QA Systems: Ensuring team adherence to externally audited QA systems.

  • Database Maintenance: Overseeing the maintenance and upkeep of drawing office databases.

  • Design Change System: Maintaining an auditable design/design change system to facilitate BS EN 9001 accreditation.

  • Drawing Assessment: Assessing basic and detailed engineering drawings during approval process.

  • Team Support: Providing guidance and support to team members in their areas of expertise.

  • Client Delivery: Ensuring timely delivery of high-quality work to clients, achieving high client satisfaction.

  • Documentation Review: Preparing and reviewing drawing documentation and processes within the Drawing Office.

  • Communications: Keeping drawing office manager, project staff and clients updated on work progress and any issues that arise.

What you’ll bring

  • In-depth understanding of engineering design principles and health & safety requirements.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with individuals, departments, and businesses.

  • Proficient in using Autodesk products, including AutoCAD 2020, Vault, ACC, ProjectWise, Revit, Raster Design 2020, and the MS Office suite.

  • Excellent organizational abilities to ensure high client satisfaction and the ability to plan and manage conflicting requirements to meet challenging deadlines.

  • Capability to investigate and comprehend detailed civil and substation design aspects of transmission / distribution network design or other energy-related assets.

  • General Administration / HR support for team members as required.

  • Contribute recommendations of continuous improvement initiatives relating to the drawing office functions and deliverables.

Minimum Criteria

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas at voltages ranging from LV to 400kV:

  • Civil/Substation Layouts Design - Drawing Production

  • Cable Route Design - Drawing Production

  • Overhead Lines Design - Drawing Production

  • Electrical Protection and Control – Drawing Production

  • HNC in Civil / Mechanical / Electrical Engineering or proven engineering experience within Transmission Substation Design - Drawing Office.

  • Understanding of Engineering Design drawing production in chosen field.

  • Previous experience in managing teams would be advantageous.

  • Proven experience in the chosen field, with a solid understanding of health and safety requirements, and compliance. Previous experience in the electrical industry would be advantageous.

  • Working knowledge of drawing standards and procedures.

  • Skilled in using 2D / 3D Autodesk products, including AutoCAD, Vault, ACC, ProjectWise, Revit, Raster Design 2020, and the MS Office suite.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Possession of a UK driving license.
