About This Position
The Senior Engineer, Development Engineering will be an individual contributor, with the focus on providing civil engineering direction and oversight for data center designs and engaging with internal & external stakeholders, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), external Architectural/Engineering (A/E) consultants and general contractors to ensure that the data center civil engineering design meets applicable code and industry requirements. This position will report directly to the Director, Development Engineering and work closely with other Engineering teams, Development, Business Development, Real Estate, Permitting, Construction, Finance, external consultants as well as the EPC to ensure safe and successful projects.
Overview of Department
The Development Engineering Team is a group of driven professionals who serve as the civil engineering subject matter experts (SMEs) for all projects, as well as the project engineers for solar, and energy storage projects. The team plays a pivotal role in managing site design, from early-stage site due diligence to Issued for Construction design. In addition to design, the team provides support during the procurement, construction and operation phases of the projects. The team manages consultants and collaborates closely with EPC partners and both internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless project delivery.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Site Due Diligence: Lead data center siting evaluations to identify local resources (water, fiber routing) as well as identify potential design risks, working through all phases of the project from early-stage siting to construction to mitigate those risks.
- Site Design Criteria: Collaborate with internal teams, hyperscalers, external consultants and AHJ to define and develop civil and structural design criteria that align with the project goals and regulatory requirements.
- Site Design Optimization: Manage site constraint maps. Optimize layout for site constraint, topography, water infrastructure, renewable energy facility interfaces, and hyperscalers’ requirements.
- Civil and Structural Design: Manage Architectural/Engineering (A/E) consultants and general contractors to complete the civil and structural design. Ensure designs comply with relevant codes, industry standards, and project specifications.
- Permitting Support: Assist in obtaining necessary development and construction permits, ensuring compliance with local regulations and expediting the approval process.
- Procurement Support: Support value engineering efforts and the preparation of contract exhibits, ensuring design solutions are cost-effective and aligned with project specifications.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent practical experience).
- Experienced Designer: 6+ years of technical civil engineering design, with 2+ years experience participating in and leading civil engineering design processes for large scale data center facilities with multi-disciplinary teams of architects and engineers.
- Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of design development, design, construction methods, industry codes, and safety standards related to the civil engineering aspects of data center design and construction.
- Problem-Solving and Collaboration: Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, thrive in a cross-functional environment, and guide discussions between design, production, cost, and land use considerations.
- Project Management: Excellent project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple simultaneous projects.
- Software Proficiency: Strong proficiency in civil engineering design software (AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D) and project management tools (Procore, MS Project).
- Experience in grading, stormwater management, erosion control, and SWPPP preparation.
- Familiarity with MEP systems integration (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) as they relate to data center builds.
- Experience taking projects through all phases of development, from siting to construction.

- Position is part of a remote team, with regular electronic and video communication
- The position requires 4x per year travel for company-wide meetups across US & Canada and regional meetings as needed by the department.

- Salary: USD $140,000 to $150,000 base salary with 25% annual target bonus
