The Senior Medical Editor is responsible for a range of editorial services, including medical editing, copyediting, proofreading and claim (fact) checking of digital and print pharmaceutical advertising materials, internal and external presentations and corporate communications. A Senior Medical Editor understands the project lifecycle of pharmaceutical advertising tactics and promotes editorial consistency and FDA compliance during this cycle through the ownership of an assigned brand(s). The Senior Medical Editor serves as a brand’s main editorial voice and demonstrates how to successfully complete editing, claim checking, and submission tasks for a variety of clients and brands. They also play an integral role in creating, maintaining, and communicating brand style guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Edit for language clarity and consistency, brand and messaging accuracy, correct balance, appropriate tone, overall cohesiveness, flow, organization, style, grammar, spelling, typographical errors, formatting, and accurate referencing
- Claim check materials to ensure comprehensive and accurate support for claims
- Copy edit and proofread electronic and print projects of every type and description to ensure grammatical accuracy and maintain style and tone inherent to each brand and/or assignment
- Identify inconsistencies and offer suggestions to revise awkward or unclear language
- Check and apply proofing and design changes to documents and review updated assets to ensure that edits have been implemented and no new errors have been introduced
- Ensure corporate, product branding, and medical-legal-regulatory compliance guidelines are explicitly followed to ensure consistency across pieces
- Provide regular, relevant updates on competitive brand information
- Maintain strict adherence to deadlines
- Display tact, diplomacy, and the ability to protect confidential information
- Availability to work remotely
- Work collaboratively with internal teams to prepare promotional materials including mobile apps, iPad detail aids, print sales aids, websites, videos, emails, speaker decks, and other digital media for medical/regulatory submissions
- Manage and resource numerous brand tasks with competing deadlines, coordinating coverage with other Editorial team members and resources
- Create and maintain key documents, such as brand style guides and process documents
- Alert Editorial management to project and task concerns, and work closely with management and other team members to address these issues as they arise
- Act as backup to Editorial Manager and covers the department when Editorial Manager is out of the office
- Ability to work nights and weekends as needed

- Ability to edit and refine HCP- and patient-facing materials, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance with industry standards
- Ensure consistency in grammar, style, and branding, adhering to AMA Manual of Style (11th Edition), client guidelines, and internal style guides
- Potential to manage editorial workflows, prioritizing multiple projects and adapting to changing deadlines in a fast-paced agency setting
- Work with creative, strategy, and account teams to refine messaging, provide editorial feedback, and ensure seamless project execution
- Leverage technology such as Workfront (Proof HQ), Microsoft Office Suite, Box, and Adobe Acrobat to streamline editorial workflows and maintain version control
Required Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent education plus professional experience) required; MS degree also accepted
- 8-10+ years of editing experience in the healthcare and/or pharmaceutical industry required. At least 1 year of experience in the advertising and/or marketing industry preferred
- Expertise in medical editing with a deep understanding of AMA Manual of Style (11th Edition), medical terminology, and pharmaceutical industry conventions
- Thorough knowledge of current AMA style; experience with medical/regulatory/legal reviews and familiarity with FDA requirements for drug promotion preferred
- Experienced in Adobe Acrobat Professional, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint
- Strong regulatory knowledge
- Exceptional attention to detail, with proven ability to fact-check clinical references, verify data accuracy, and ensure compliance in promotional materials
- Proficiency in editing both HCP- and patient-facing materials, applying health literacy and plain language principles as needed
- Ability to work across multiple content formats, including print, digital, web, email, and social media
- Strong collaboration skills, with experience working cross-functionally with creative, account, strategy, and regulatory teams
- Proactive problem-solving mindset, with the ability to anticipate editorial challenges and suggest solutions
- Adaptability in a fast-paced environment, with strong project management and prioritization skills
- Technical proficiency in Ziflow, Microsoft Office, Box, and Adobe Acrobat for content review and approval workflows
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Science, or a related field
- 8-10+ years of agency experience editing pharmaceutical content, including materials for both healthcare professionals (HCPs) and patients
- Prior experience working in a medical communications, healthcare advertising, or pharmaceutical marketing agency preferred
