POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Director of Development plays a critical role in advancing Equis Research’s mission by leading a comprehensive, values-aligned fundraising program.  This role will report into the Managing Director. This role is responsible for developing and executing strategies to grow and sustain revenue from individual donors, foundations, and allied organizations. The Senior Director of Development manages development staff, collaborates closely with cofounders and senior leadership, and ensures compliance across 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) fundraising streams. They also oversee internal systems—from projections to donor data—and help shape the organization’s fundraising voice through clear, compelling communications. This role requires strategic vision, operational discipline, and a strong commitment to Equis’s mission and long-term success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fundraising Strategy Development & Execution

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive organizational fundraising strategy focused on individual, institutional, and allied groups; adjust and refine the strategy as needed
  • Lead cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship efforts to strengthen donor and funder relationships and drive sustained investment in Equis’s work
  • Collaborate with the President/Executive Director to establish annual and multi-year revenue goals aligned with organizational priorities
  • Maintain and regularly update organizational fundraising projections in collaboration with the President/Executive Director

Management & Team Leadership

  • Directly manage and support development staff; set clear goals and expectations, provide regular feedback, and support professional growth and development
  • Equip cofounders and staff to engage effectively in fundraising efforts; manage and support fundraising consultants as needed
  • Collaborate across teams to develop clear, compelling materials that reflect Equis’s mission, values, and impact—strengthening donor engagement and fundraising results

Compliance & Systems

  • Maintain compliance across 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) fundraising streams by ensuring funds are sourced and reported in accordance with IRS regulations, with support from legal counsel.
  • Own and manage the donor database, ensuring data accuracy, reporting reliability, and effective use of development systems
  • Manage the development department’s budget, ensuring strategic use of resources and alignment with organizational priorities and policies

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated understanding of legal compliance of funding streams and experience working for a network of organizations or a blended organization, such as a 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4)
  • Approximately 8+ years of fundraising experience in a mission-driven organization, with deep experience in strategically cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major donors, including direct donor asks
  • Proven track record of success in project management, with a keen attention to detail, comfort and confidence in managing up, and strong sense of ownership and responsibility in driving activity and results
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication with a strong eye for detail and editing capabilities; ability to distill and present complex information effectively, tailored to donor interests.
  • A high degree of professionalism and the ability to maintain client and donor confidentiality
  • Knowledge of local and national philanthropic trends and the ability to design programs for non-profit development that capitalize on those trends

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer 
  • The ability to communicate with colleagues, partners, and clients via phone, video call, and email


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Equis is a national remote office environment with team members located across all continental U.S. time zones. Candidates should be prepared to either work from home or a location of their choosing that is located within the continental United States. 

This position requires the ability to work core hours Monday through Friday in your local time. This position will require occasional nights and weekend work and some in-person attendance for all-staff or department level events, approximately 2 per year, which require overnight travel. 


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This is a fully remote (USA only), full-time position, exempt with occasional domestic travel and a competitive salary range of $120,000 to $175,000 per year. This salary range represents a good faith estimate of what Equis may pay for this position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as budget availability and commensurate with the selected candidates’ experience. As the role progresses, there is potential for salary growth and professional development opportunities commensurate with the evolution of the role.
