Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work - whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.
About this role
Compass is Atlassian's developer experience platform, allowing engineering organizations to track the software they've built. It provides a central place for those organizations to operate and build software, and enables engineers and the organization as a whole to track the health of that software and understand team performance. Compass is looking for a Sr. Design Manager to lead the product and content designers responsible for the Compass user experience. You'll partner with product and engineering leadership to set direction for Compass. You'll coach and set goals for your direct reports, and help them develop their careers. You'll leverage UX research and data science to understand user needs and customer goals, and advocate for users through your design leadership. You'll be responsible for setting and executing the design vision for the product, and working with other design managers across Atlassian to ensure Compass works seamlessly within the Atlassian ecosystem. Working with Product and Engineering leaders, you'll establish OKRs for the Compass product, and organize your team to best address those goals. You'll run design crits within your team and with other leaders across Atlassian. You'll advance Atlassian's design language and ensure Compass both leverages the best of Atlassian design - and contribute to it. But most of all you'll work with a collaborative design team working on a relatively new product with interesting projects!
Compass enables organizations to improve their developer's experience and software teams' health, and the Compass team is focused on delivering user-centered solutions that help our customers meet that goal. Together, we'll empower our customers to help their software teams be successful.
What you'll do

  • Manage and mentor a team of product and content designers, fostering a supportive environment that encourages craft excellence and career growth.
  • Oversee complex design initiatives spanning multiple workstreams, maintaining a high-quality standard and removing blockers to ensure timely delivery.
  • Work closely with Engineering, Product Management, and Research to deliver cohesive, end-to-end product experiences.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders across the Atlassian developer solutions portfolio to drive alignment and support for design initiatives.
  • Define and deliver conceptual models and incremental design improvements for core components, focusing on consistent and valuable user experiences.
  • Champion design best practices, inclusive design, and pattern adoption, and drive continuous improvement of processes to support quality outcomes.

  • Ensure high-quality, outcome-focused deliverables by effectively managing and prioritizing multiple workstreams.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the Atlassian developer solutions ecosystem and how design decisions impact the broader Atlassian products.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and feedback, fostering a high-performing, balanced, and diverse design team.
  • Promote alignment and build trust across cross-functional teams, clearly communicating complex issues and fostering collaboration.
  • Lead your team through change and ambiguity, ensuring consistent delivery and adapting to evolving priorities.

Your background

  • Experience: 12+ years in product design with 5+ years managing teams, ideally within a tech or SaaS environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in interaction design, prototyping, content design, or visual design, with a passion for delivering exceptional user experiences.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional partners, align stakeholders, and influence product strategy.
  • Clear, effective communicator with a strong ability to present and defend design decisions and direction.
  • A natural mentor with a talent for developing and retaining diverse, high-performing teams.
  • Ideally, experience leading design for tools targeted software development roles.
