About the team and position

In today’s world, data is king and this is the team with all the data. If you’re excited about understanding complex data sets from disparate sources, this is the team for you. Our data science and analytics team informs everything Carvana does from creating the valuation algorithm to influence purchasing decisions to understanding the driver affecting future market conditions.  

What you’ll be doing

  • Design, develop, and maintain data models and pipelines for the cloud data warehouse to support decision-making and critical software applications.
  • Partner with stakeholders to define success metrics, guide technology investments, and translate analytical findings into actionable business strategies.
  • Build and implement optimization algorithms, ensure seamless system integration, and enhance scalability through performance analysis and prototyping.
  • Aggregate and automate data processing from diverse sources, ensuring data quality and discovering new sources to improve analytics capabilities.
  • Develop prototypes and minimum viable products (MVPs) to address business challenges, and implement solutions with a focus on scalability and maintainability.
  • Take ownership of other analytics and data-related tasks as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the team and organization.

What you should know

  • Ph.D. or Masters degree in Engineering, Applied Math,  Operations Research, Computer Science, or Statistics.
  • 5+ years of experience doing quantitative analysis, with proven experience managing major research or analytics projects.
  • Strong foundation in statistical theory and practical experience developing machine learning models, clustering algorithms, dimensionality reduction techniques, optimization solutions, and time series forecasting.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply advanced analytical methods to real-world business challenges, particularly in domains such as supply chain optimization, pricing strategies, revenue management, and inventory control.
  • Proficiency in developing production-quality code in Python or similar object-oriented programming (OOP) languages.
  • Advanced experience with SQL and relational database systems (e.g., Snowflake, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL).
  • Proven experience in designing and developing production data pipelines and API-driven solutions, leveraging tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently, deliver results with minimal supervision, and push projects to successful completion.
  • Excellent ability to convey complex technical concepts and ideas clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with semi-structured and unstructured data, with a strong preference for expertise in automotive industry datasets and vehicle valuation.
