Senior Communications/Naval Combat Systems Engineer

Position Summary

Thales Canada is looking for a Senior Communications / Naval Combat Systems Engineer to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy.

The Senior Communications / Naval Combat Systems Engineer will work within the Thales LCMM & Engineering Team and is responsible for providing engineering and project management support of Communications and Naval Combat Systems including but not limited to:

  • Navigation Systems
  • Communications Systems
  • Command and control systems
  • Data processing systems
  • Above water and underwater sensor systems
  • Ship’s weapons systems and its ammunition

In addition, the Senior Naval Combat Systems Engineer will also be responsible for developing and managing the software management program for the AJISS project.  This role will also support the Engineering Services Manager with coordinating the work of the other communications/ naval combat systems technical staff, which include engineers and Life Cycle Materiel Managers (LCMMs).

Key Areas of Responsibility

The key functions and areas of responsibility for the Senior Communications / Naval Combat Systems Engineer include the following:

  • Providing technical support of deficiencies of equipment or capability, developing technical solutions and risk assessments; Providing technical advice to enable combat system equipment and/or systems to be correctly operated or maintained.
  • Conducting technical investigations into problems associated with combat systems, equipment and/or software issues, including failure analysis and solution development.
  • Developing and reviewing combat system related technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance job instructions, and investigation reports; Manage the preparation of combat system related design change documentation including manufacturing drawings, maintenance and installation instructions, and test and trials documentation.
  • Performing Life Cycle and Materiel Management functions including but not limited to equipment obsolescence, material compatibility and disposal management; Analyzing requirements associated with baseline changes to the ships configuration, equipment and software.
  • Preparing Work Packages and cost estimates for customer approval; Preparing documented work scopes, suitable for the solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers.
  • Developing or  managing combat system related engineering changes; Developing engineering plans, processes and procedures related to combat systems as well as ship based software;
  • Ensuring the design and configuration control of combat systems including conducting functional and physical configuration audits.
  • Defining and managing media storage and transfer requirements; and Defining, developing and maintaining software configuration documentation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a Systems Engineer with experience with Marine Communications and Navigation Systems;
  • Bachelor Degree in Computer, Electrical, Electronics Engineering or Naval Architecture;
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) in Ontario, Nova Scotia, or British Columbia, Canada;

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy as a Naval Combat Systems Engineering Officer;
  • Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets;
  • Previous experience working with a defense contract;
  • Demonstrated project management experience; and

Physical Demands

  • Predominantly office work but will be required to occasionally work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships
  • May be required to undertake inspections on Naval ships which may involve involving bending and twisting, and working aloft

Special Position Requirements

  • Schedule: 40 hours per week
  • Physical Environment: Hybrid position – which is a mix of working from home and onsite (in office, at customer site or on board ships alongside in harbour)
  • Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel may be required in support of the ships
