About the US Claims team:

The US Claims team at Hiscox is a growing group of professionals working together to manage their claims directly with high levels of authority to provide fair and fast resolution of claims for our insured and broker partners. With strong growth across the US business, the Claims team is focused on delivering profitability while reinforcing Hiscox’s strong brand built on a long history of outstanding claims handling.

The role:

Superior claims service is central to our corporate culture and brand. Claims Examiners are an integral part of our in-house claims servicing team. This is not a “back office” role. Claims Examiners interact daily and directly with our clients and business partners, so a passion for superior customer service and professionalism are key characteristics of the role. 

Senior Claims Examiners excel at proactive claims management and control of external vendors and third-party administrators. They take a leading role in standard to medium volatility claims and coverage analysis.  Senior Claims Examiners require minimal level of managerial direction and guidance on routine matters falling within authority levels. They are also able to interact professionally with internal and external business partners and represent claims department.

What you’ll be doing as the Sr. Claims Examiner:

  • Independently manage book of commercial claims in accordance with Hiscox’s Values and the appropriate legal and regulatory framework.
  • Timely and accurately evaluate coverage and draft position letters
  • Keep senior claims management timely and adequately informed of key claims and issues through verbal and written communication
  • Liaison directly with insureds, underwriters and brokers on a daily basis
  • Maintain timely and accurate file documentation
  • Maintain target service levels
  • Utilize broad handling authority to employ best practices and Hiscox guidelines to reach early resolutions favorable to Hiscox’s customers and business.
  • Strategize with insureds and defense counsel to develop and implement best plan to drive favorable resolution
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with defense counsel to gain early understanding of liability, risk exposure, and costs
  • Continually assess exposures and adequacy of claims reserves
  • Proactively and professionally manage claims to control defense counsel and costs in cooperation with insureds and counsel
  • Actively monitor and participate in underlying negotiations/litigation
  • Attend mediations and/or settlement conferences where appropriate; travel as required
  • Mentor junior Claims Examiner

Our must-haves:

  • 5+ years of claims adjusting, examiner experience or degree in insurance/risk management required.  Paralegal certification also considered.
  • New York Labor Law experience and risk transfer practice preferred
  • Minimum Associates Degree or equivalent work experience; Bachelor’s Degree Preferred
  • Passion for great customer service, including strong ability to establish a positive rapport with our clients, brokers and business partners 
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Team-oriented, with ability to excel in a collegial environment
  • Active insurance adjuster’s license issued by NY or current residential/DHS location or ability to secure within 45 days
