Job Description

 

About the Role:

As a Senior Accountant, you will provide general ledger and financial analysis accounting support to the company and customers through journal processing, data verification, account reconciliation, and issue resolution. You will complete monthly variance analysis, forecasts and budgets for operating results. You will provide superior customer support to the business managers and accounting staff of related departments. You will ensure that monthly account reconciliations, operational reports and the month-end close processes are performed as assigned. You will report to the Manager of Financial Accounting.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply proper accounting treatment to financial transactions and record applicable journal entries to the General Ledger.
  • Prepare budgets and periodic forecasts for single-copy revenue and expense departments. Analyze actual results to determine drivers for variances from department budget/forecast.
  • Perform analytical review on selected print circulation revenue and expense general ledger accounts which are related to the single copy portion of the printed paper and research unexpected or unusual results.  Provide analysis of the composition and validity of account balances.
  • Respond to questions from departments regarding general accounting and system matters, investigate and resolve GL inconsistencies, and assist with certain ad hoc or customized analytics.
  • Query, mine, analyze, and report on data sets and use data analytics tools to validate and support recorded transactions.
  • Make recommendations for process improvements and projects.
  • Prioritize and ensure the completion of critical tasks.
  • Work with Single Copy department managers and directors to determine necessary month-end journal entries.
  • Ensure accounting procedures are documented; maintain internal controls.
  • Demonstrates support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent years of professional experience.
  • 5+ years of general accounting experience.
  • Master of spreadsheet, presentation, analytics, database and financial applications.
  • Proficient at interpreting and summarizing financial data clearly and concisely.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, necessary to express ideas across all levels in the organization.
  • Experience with general accounting concepts and procedures (GAAP, FASB) with a broad understanding of complex accounting concepts and can apply professional judgment to complex accounting matters.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Accounting experience within forecasting and budgeting.
  • Experience with Workday, Adaptive, and Office Connect.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $70,000.00 and $85,000.00.
