General Summary:The Small Business Consultant functions as a marketing and technical expert who represents Unum – educating and motivating other professionals to sell Unum products to their clients in the small case market. The SBC is responsible for building relationships with insurance brokers, agents and consultants to advise, educate, price and negotiate the best employee benefit offering for their employer clients.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Achieve office and personal sales goals through consultation, negotiations and positioning of Unum offerings within profit and product design guidelines.
  • Execute a renewal plan to achieve financial results for a specific block of business. 
  • Develop and build relationships with brokers in an assigned territory and/or for assigned products in the small case market
  • Build a pipeline of opportunities to sell and support the acquisition and retention of new customers in the small case market
  • Acquire a broad knowledge of Unum’s group and voluntary product portfolio and service offerings and how to position sales solutions to brokers and clients
  • Work with Quote Unum and Underwriting to effectively negotiate and price business in the small case market
  • Build strong broker/distribution partnerships
  • Build strong sales team partnerships
  • Execute broker development plans to expand market
  • Manage pricing authority and coordinating risk decisions with underwriting
  • Educate brokers and clients on key product, statutory and compliance topics pertaining to applicable insurance offerings
  • Partner with home office operations and sales management to ensure optimum service delivery
  • Advise on the enrollment strategy for new and existing customers and work with MC team to ensure optimum enrollment results
  • Prepare and present block reviews for top brokers
  • May perform other duties as assigned

Job Specifications

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Licensed to solicit insurance in the states within assigned office (use Field Comp Policy & Practice document for specific details on licensing requirements)
  • Demonstrated ability to establish a leadership presence with internal and external partners along with a strong ability to create relationships
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration and presentation skills
  • Ability to handle multiple, often competing priorities
  • Highly energized, motivated self-starter who thrives on a challenge and in a fast-paced environment
  • High level of organization, implementation/execution and project management abilities
  • Demonstrate a "can-do" spirit, a sense of optimism and excitement, ownership and commitment/loyalty

Fully and partially leveraged roles are paid pursuant to a uniformly applied sales compensation plan. For partially leveraged roles, a starting salary or salary range will be listed in the above job description. If salary information is not listed in the job description above, compensation is based solely on commissions.
