The Restricted Fund Accountant position is part of the Sponsored Projects Accounting and Compliance (SPAC) team within the Office of the Controller and collaborates closely with the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs (OSRP). This role primarily supports post-award activities for grants and contracts, including fiscal management, effort verification, and compliance with reporting requirements. 

Under the direction of the supervisor, the position ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to sponsored projects including student loans. Responsibilities include reviewing and interpreting award terms and conditions to ensure accurate and timely award setup in Workday and/or Banner. Additionally, the accountant reviews and initiates monthly, quarterly, and annual grant journal entries, completes timely reconciliations to facilitate invoicing and financial reporting to various funding organizations.  

This position ensures compliance with policies and guidelines of MSU Denver, as well as federal, state, local, governmental, and non-governmental funding organizations. While the responsibilities outlined here reflect the primary duties of the role, workload and tasks may vary, and additional responsibilities within SPAC may be assigned as needed to support evolving business needs. An approximate summary of the responsibilities is as follows:

  • Reviews and approves all restricted fund expenditures, including AP, wire transfers, internal transfers, payroll reclassifications, and corporate card transactions, ensuring they are reasonable, allowable, and allocable. 

  • Stays updated on the cost allowance policies of each funding agency. 

  • Reviews and verifies subcontract invoices for accuracy and timely submission. 

  • Ensures compliance and manages the schedule for all stipend payments.  

  • Reviews, and completes journal entries along with fiscal reconciliations for sponsored projects, including: 

  • Fringe-to-Actual entries for grant base pay. 

  • Unemployment entries. 

  • Actual fringe entries. 

  • Direct Loan (DL) and Modified Direct Loan (MDL) accruals and reversals. 

  • Confirms monthly payroll grant transactions. 

  • Manages unapplied payment reclasses and reversals. 

  • Record semester financial aid wire transfers from all relevant agencies. 

  • Assists Principal Investigators (PIs) with the creation of customized reports. 

  • Supports interim and fiscal year-end closings. 

  • Assist with other ad hoc tasks as required.

  • Maintains Financial Aid (F/A) worksheet of student loan draws and forwards to Financial Aid (F/A) for review. 

  • Initiates return of funds as needed or requested 

  • Completes billing requests and invoices, including Foundation billings, as necessary. 

  • Manages Cash Match and Indirect Cost Rate (ICR) balances and communicates updates to relevant MSU Denver departments. 

  • Maintains monthly Budget-to-Actual Report. 

  • Updates and verifies all grant budgets in Workday.

  • Serves as the point of contact for grant Principal Investigators (PIs) and Administrators, ensuring timely responses to inquiries from all MSU Denver team members. 

  • Actively use and assist with SPAC ticketing system, including customized features in Workday, such as Grant Dashboard and Effort Certification tasks. 

  • Assists with post-award closeout process of awards.  

  • Performs grant collection duties and serves as backup to Grant/Financial Aid Accountant. 

 

Work Location: The position may facilitate remote work at the discretion of the supervisor and may be a hybrid position with in-office work on some days of each week. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance from an accredited college or university. 

  • At least two years of work experience in accounting or finance, using accounting software applications. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Excel, Outlook, and Access. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Previous grants accounting experience. 

  • Experience with Workday and Banner applications with emphasis on finance modules. 

  • Experience handling complex reconciliations. 

  • Functional knowledge of advanced Excel functions, including the ability to perform data analysis with formulas, graphs, and data visualization. 

Salary for Announcement
Under Colorado law, MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. 

The salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $45,300 - $68,000 

Work Hours/Type:  

8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday 

Hybrid schedule (on-campus and remote) available for this position
