Design, analyze, and test liquid rocket propulsion systems. Collaborate on hardware development and integrate components to enhance performance and production.
Summary Generated by Built In

Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

The Launch Propulsion Engineering Team owns the design, analysis, manufacturing, testing, flight, refinement, and industrialization of Ursa Major’s launch vehicle liquid rocket engines.

Success on this team requires an understanding of liquid rocket propulsion mechanical and fluid systems, strong critical thinking skills, attention to detail, organization, flexibility, effective communication across discipline groups, and an eagerness to learn new skills and mature new technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Research design solutions and execute trade studies for liquid rocket engine hardware.
  • Conceptualize, design, and analyze mechanical components and fluid systems.
  • Source, manufacture, assemble, and test product prototypes, iterate, and transition to stable production.
  • Design and develop manufacturing processes, subscale test articles, validation processes, and test fixtures to confirm product capabilities.
  • Work directly with interfacing components, engineers, and groups (mating hardware, avionics, test, supply chain, manufacturing) to maximize success of integrated engine design and its development/production programs.
  • Review, compile, and present design and analysis documentation, design reviews, bills of material, product cost estimates, and associated documentation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics
  • 2+ years of full-lifecyle hardware design and development (e.g., professional experience, university design team, personal project).

Desired Experience:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • Experience as responsible engineer, chief engineer, or equivalent product owner role for complex mechanical product(s).
  • Experience developing hardware from concept to working prototypes, and refining the designs and operations to achieve robustness and autonomy.
  • Detailed knowledge of metallic manufacturing techniques, processes, and equipment (e.g. machining, welding, brazing, forming, additive manufacturing).
  • Mastery of CAD, drafting, and GD&T.
  • Strong first-order mechanical and fluids analysis capabilities and FEA/CFD software experience.
  • Thorough comprehension of launch vehicle architectures, liquid rocket engines, and aerospace components.
  • 2+ years of practical liquid rocket propulsion and/or vehicle design/analysis experience.

What We Do

At Ursa Major, we are powering the future of aerospace. We see aerospace advancement as a technological imperative and we’re accelerating the industry as the leading source of world-class propulsion systems.

We meticulously design, craft, and test engines that are optimized to offer high performance, diverse capability, and unwavering reliability.

Why Work With Us

As much as we value talent, we know that it’s meaningless without the drive, humility, and hunger to work on a team. A team shares a common goal and obsesses about achieving it together. This requires leaving egos at the door and committing to do whatever’s required (within reason) to achieve mission success.
