Ursa Major was founded to address a critical shortfall in the U.S. industrial base and bring a new model to aerospace and defense systems: we design and manufacture the world’s leading propulsion systems for space, hypersonic applications, and missile systems.

Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team – a team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.

The Ursa Major Quality team plays a critical role verifying component, subassembly, and engine requirements using advanced technology and inspection skills. Our Inspection team is flexible, holding and applying different skills to meet rapid development programs and maintain stable production schedules. We are looking for a talented CMM Programmer who can program difficult and complex parts, complete hands-on inspections, and support Engineering as they problem solve rocket engine challenges.

Responsibilities:

  • Program, optimize, and maintain advanced inspection equipment, including CMMs (Calypso), 3D scanners (Zeiss Inspect), and comparators (Starrett M3) to ensure precise and efficient measurement processes.
  • Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and quality personnel to solve complex manufacturing and inspection challenges, maintaining a professional and solution-oriented approach.
  • Review and validate inspection programs created by other team members, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with GD&T and engineering standards while providing constructive feedback.
  • Provide detailed dimensional reports and data analysis to engineering and manufacturing teams for troubleshooting and process improvements.
  • Inspect components using hand tools (micrometers, height stands, calipers, etc.) and advanced metrology techniques.
  • Perform first article inspections (FAIs) and document results per AS9102 or similar standards.
  • Conduct nonconforming feature evaluations, supporting root cause analysis and corrective action implementation through collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Utilize borescopes and other visual inspection methods to assess part and assembly quality.
  • Support ongoing improvements in inspection methodologies, automation, and data analysis tools.
  • Assist in or perform the design and development of CMM fixtures to optimize inspection accuracy and repeatability.
  • Assist with training and mentoring of junior team members in inspection and programming techniques with a focus on knowledge-sharing and team development.
  • Other duties as assigned by quality leadership.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in CMM programming and dimensional inspection in a high-precision manufacturing environment (aerospace, defense, medical, or similar).
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience programming CMMs using Calypso software (required).
  • Calypso Basic and Advanced training or equivalent hands-on programming experience.
  • Experience programming from as-printed or as-cast datums and dealing with complex datum structures.
  • Advanced GD&T knowledge, including profile, position, and material condition modifiers.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, engineering standards, and specifications.
  • Proficiency in using a variety of hand gauges and tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, etc.).
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in a respectful and team-oriented manner.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly and effectively to engineers, machinists, and team members.
  • Ability to provide training and mentorship in a constructive and supportive manner.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Zeiss GOM Inspect Pro (Scanbox) training and programming experience.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Engineering, Manufacturing, or related discipline).
  • Experience with automated inspection processes and integration into manufacturing workflows.

What We Do

At Ursa Major, we are powering the future of aerospace. We see aerospace advancement as a technological imperative and we’re accelerating the industry as the leading source of world-class propulsion systems.

We meticulously design, craft, and test engines that are optimized to offer high performance, diverse capability, and unwavering reliability.

Why Work With Us

As much as we value talent, we know that it’s meaningless without the drive, humility, and hunger to work on a team. A team shares a common goal and obsesses about achieving it together. This requires leaving egos at the door and committing to do whatever’s required (within reason) to achieve mission success.
