Who We Are:
At Northland, we’re enablers of change, united by our journey to transform the energy sector into the foundation for a sustainable future.

Since our inception, we’ve been early movers in the energy industry, adopting new initiatives that pave the way for communities across the globe and helping forge their path towards a carbon-neutral landscape.

We’re a different kind of independent power producer. As developers, owners and operators who are at the forefront of the energy transition, we’re uniquely positioned to leave a lasting impact in the regions where we operate. We’ve expanded our business across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia to become a global leader, all by bringing together industry experts to find solutions with an entrepreneurial mindset.

While our work powers communities across the globe, Northland is powered by our people.

As Project Engineer, you will support the full lifecycle of our power plant projects – from origination and development through to construction and operations. While your primary focus will be on gas turbine power plants, you will also provide support to other renewables and battery energy storage projects as needed. You will be part of a close-knit team working across multiple workstreams, giving you the chance to be hands-on with a variety of cutting-edge technologies and project phases.
This role will be based in Toronto and will also involve regular travel to our construction sites across Canada.

Key Responsibilities:

Development:

  • Perform constraints analysis and conduct due diligence on greenfield opportunities, including technology evaluation, interconnection, and conceptual design.
  • Support project definition through scope and schedule development.
  • Provide inputs to financial models with respect to capex and opex as well as engine performance.
  • Support environmental permitting processes and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Stay current with developments in clean fuels and emerging energy technologies.

Construction:

  • Support the development of contracting strategy, prepare contract Exhibits, and negotiate contracts with key vendors and contractors.
  • Manage and direct project engineering firms, including conducting design reviews and enforcing contract compliance and performance.
  • Coordinate technical workstreams across engineering, procurement, and construction functions.
  • Conduct on-site inspections to supervise vendor performance, construction progress, and on-site troubleshooting.
  • Witness factory acceptance testing and enforce contract compliance.

Operations:

  • Provide operational support by managing Operations capital projects, reliability projects, and troubleshooting technical issues as they arise.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement mitigating measures.
  • Supervise contractors, trades, and operations staff on a project-by-project basis.
  • Mentor junior staff and facilitate knowledge-sharing with engineers of other disciplines.
  • Support other technical projects as they arise.

Who You Are:

  • Methodical and organized: You can effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a deadline-driven environment and are known to create and maintain comprehensive project documentation.
  • A strong communicator: Your spoken and written communication is excellent, and you can influence your internal and external stakeholders coming from varied backgrounds.
  • A proactive problem-solver: You have the ability to proactively identify potential issues and roadblocks, anticipate challenges, and work collaboratively with team members and management to resolve complex problems as they arise.
  • Flexible: You are agile in your approach and thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. You recognize the simultaneous need for rigorous adherence to processes and the flexibility to adapt to inevitable changes along the way.
  • A team-player: You are able to effectively integrate with various project teams and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. Your hands-on approach allows you to seamlessly switch gears and adapt to the needs of simultaneous multiple projects.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Professional Engineer, licensed in at least one province in Canada, preference for mechanical engineering discipline though other disciplines will be considered in combination with relevant experience.
  • 2+ years of direct experience in conventional or renewable power generation.
  • Familiar with major gas turbines and reciprocating engine products; experience with gas turbine power plants including simple cycle and combined cycle.
  • Solid knowledge of engineering codes and standards.
  • Experience managing EPC contracts and OEM supply agreements, including contract development and performance oversight.
  • Proven track-record of leading projects across the full lifecycle – from origination and development through engineering, construction, and operations.
