The Role

Summary Generated by Built In

It all started with an idea at Block in 2013. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic ecosystem, developing unique financial products, including Afterpay/Clearpay, to provide a better way to send, spend, invest, borrow and save to our 50+ million monthly active customers. We want to redefine the world's relationship with money to make it more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible.
Today, Cash App has thousands of employees working globally across office and remote locations, with a culture geared toward innovation, collaboration and impact. We've been a distributed team since day one, and many of our roles can be done remotely from the countries where Cash App operates. No matter the location, we tailor our experience to ensure our employees are creative, productive, and happy.
The Role
As Product Counsel, you'll have a broad range of responsibilities providing legal guidance on product and feature development. You will be an integral part of the Cash App Legal team and partner with our Banking product team to maintain current offerings and develop new ones while managing legal risk and ensuring regulatory compliance. Our Banking offerings include the Cash App Card, direct deposits, Savings Yield, Free Overdraft Coverage, and several other products and features. As we expand, your ideas and contributions will make an immediate and meaningful impact.
You are highly motivated, organized, and creative. You are curious, with a desire to understand underlying causes and motivations. You are able to research and master complex legal topics and communicate them to non-lawyers in brief, clear language. You are capable of an expert understanding of a legal issue but can separate the practical from the academic and provide clear, accurate, and actionable advice to the business team. You are kind, patient, and respectful to your co-workers, and bring a positive attitude to the office.
You Will

  • Provide guidance to the Banking team (including product managers, engineers, and designers) on issues related to products and features throughout the entire product development lifecycle
  • Develop close, trusted relationships with business partners and stay informed on key product developments
  • Draft terms of service, cardholder agreements, legal memos, product policies, and product disclosures
  • Work closely with other support teams (including regulatory, tax, compliance, accounting, and outside counsel) to provide guidance to business partners
  • Actively cultivate creative ideas and insights into how legal frameworks can support new product developments and customer experiences
  • Draft and negotiate commercial agreements affecting your products and services

You Have

  • 7+ years of combined, relevant experience in law firms, governmental agencies, and/or in-house legal departments
  • Excellent active listening and communication skills
  • Fluency translating legal advice into actionable guidance for creative products and collaborators
  • Ability to quickly adapt and reorient in an evolving regulatory and business environment
  • Familiarity with launching products and advising on the legal and regulatory aspects of product development in the technology space
  • Sound, practical business judgment, and creativity solving problems
  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active membership in at least one state bar

Even Better

  • Prior experience as product or regulatory counsel at either a bank or a fintech
  • Prior experience in financial services and payments and/or card network industry rules and regulations
