Position Title: Print Process Engineer
Position Location: 35 Medford St., Somerville, MA 02143
Duties: Conduct scientific experiments to understand 3D printing processes. Investigate thermal mechanics of the printing process to inform and adjust print process and develop thermal models. Reproduce problems observed on printers and find the root cause of the issue. Design and fabricate test instrumentation. Evaluate current printer performances for areas for improvement. Develop new features for optimizing print speed, material properties, and/or quality. Generate and tune material-specific parameters to improve the quality of the prints. Generate optical and tool pathing controls for new 3D printing architectures. Develop firmware for different machines. Plan, execute, and analyze tests on hardware to validate firmware implementation. Develop software tools to assess hardware quality during manufacturing. Log research and test results to convey learnings to the broader teams and prevent duplication of work. Write best practice documents for internal tools and performance optimization procedures. Present new software tools to the broader team to facilitate internal adoption. 10% domestic travel required for trade shows and customer and supplier visits.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or a related field of study. Applicant must be proficient with each of the following skills: software programming language including Python or C++; simulation software including MATLAB; proficient in CAD software for mechanical designs, and machine shop tools to fabricate prototype parts; statistical analysis and design of experiments for process optimization and proof-of-concept studies; 3D printing technologies, specifically SLS (Selective Laser Sintering), or DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering); and in-depth knowledge in heat transfer, thermodynamics and electromechanical designs.
Experience can be gained concurrently or as part of education curriculum, co-op, or internship.
