Our team works closely with our US stores and eCommerce business to better serve customers by empowering team members, stores, and merchants with technological innovation. From groceries and entertainment to sporting goods and crafts, Walmart U.S. offers an extensive selection that our customers value, whether they shop online at Walmart.com, through one of our mobile apps, or in-store. Focus areas include customers, stores and employees, in-store service, merchant tools, merchant data science, and search and personalization.

As a Principal Engineer you will lead the design and architecture of software systems and solve complex problems by leveraging state-of-the-art technology. You will collaborate with and execute major cross-platform executions as a team, or independently when needed.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the design and architecture of scalable, robust, and high-performance e-commerce systems.

  • Define and document architectural standards, best practices, and design patterns for the e-commerce platform.

  • Evaluate and select appropriate technologies, tools, and frameworks that align with business goals and technical requirements.

  • Design end-to-end system solutions that meet functional and non-functional requirements such as availability, scalability, and security.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, UX/UI, and operations, to translate business requirements into technical designs.

  • Conduct design reviews, ensuring alignment with the overall architecture and identifying potential risks or challenges.

  • Actively participate in coding, code reviews, and debugging to ensure high-quality software development.

  • Develop and maintain core components and services of the e-commerce platform.

  • Optimise system performance, identifying and resolving bottlenecks in the codebase and infrastructure.

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and teams, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

  • Provide technical leadership during the development lifecycle, from conception to deployment.

  • Drive technical excellence within the engineering team through regular knowledge sharing, workshops, and code reviews.

  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in e-commerce and software engineering.

  • Propose and implement innovative solutions that enhance the customer experience and improve operational efficiency.

  • Continuously improve the architecture and codebase to reduce technical debt and support future growth.

  • Work closely with product management to understand business priorities and ensure technical alignment.

  • Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, providing clarity and insight.

  • Collaborate with DevOps and operations teams to ensure smooth deployment and operation of the e-commerce platform.

  • Deliver expected business results while putting the customer first and consistently applying an omni merchant mindset and the EDLP and EDLC business models to all plans.

  • Build strong and trusting relationships with team members and business partners; work collaboratively and cross-functionally to achieve objectives; and communicates with energy and positivity to motivate, influence, and inspire commitment and action.

  • Create a discipline and focus around developing talent, promote an environment allowing everyone to bring their best selves to work, empower associates and partners to act in the best interest of the customer and company, and regularly recognize others' contributions and accomplishments.

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent.

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on architecture, system design, and hands-on development.

  • Proven experience in designing and building large-scale e-commerce systems or similar high-traffic, high-availability systems.

  • Strong expertise in software development using languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, and experience with frameworks like Spring, Django, or Node.js.

  • Deep understanding of micro services architecture, cloud computing (AWS, Azure, or GCP), and containerisation technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Solid experience with databases (SQL and NoSQL) and data modelling for large-scale distributed systems.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevOps practices.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a focus on optimising performance and scalability.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead and inspire engineering teams.

  • Experience with front-end technologies such as React, Angular, or Vue.js.

  • Knowledge of security best practices for e-commerce systems.

  • Prior experience in a Principal Engineer or similar leadership role.
