General Summary:The Principal Enterprise Observability Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing enterprise observability solutions from the ground up. This role requires deep technical expertise in infrastructure, monitoring, and automation, as well as strategic leadership in advancing the organization's observability roadmap. The engineer will lead the adoption of industry best practices, drive innovation, and ensure the organization's observability strategy delivers actionable insights to improve system performance, reliability, and resilience.
This individual will play a key role in setting up observability solutions, going beyond traditional monitoring to establish a comprehensive, proactive approach to system health. They will work closely with leadership and cross-functional teams to define and execute a strategic roadmap for observability, leveraging AIOps and emerging technologies.
The Principal Enterprise Observability Engineer will work directly with key stakeholders, including senior leadership and vendors, to evaluate and implement the right tools, solutions, and strategies. This role is responsible for leading the execution—deploying and integrating observability platforms, ensuring scalability, and driving continuous improvements. The ideal candidate will provide thought leadership to shape the organization’s observability and AIOps vision while actively engaging in hands-on technical work.
This is a hybrid opportunity available in one of the following locations: Atlanta, GA; Portland, ME; Chattanooga, TN; or Columbia, SC.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Industry certifications preferred.
  • Extensive experience in strategic planning, systems design, and development.
  • Strong experience in application monitoring tools, preferably Dynatrace, Nagios
  • Experience designing, implementing, and optimizing enterprise observability solutions by adopting industry best practices and driving innovations
  • Develop and maintain custom extensions to enable monitoring for complex distributed systems
  • Configuration and customization of Dynatrace solution (or similar tools) that includes integration with other tools.
  • Advanced expertise in public cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP).
  • Skilled in business requirements analysis and technical architecture.
  • Proficient in scripting languages and development tools (Python, PowerShell).
  • Experience with APM and monitoring tools like Dynatrace, AWS CloudWatch, Splunk Cloud, Cribl, Nagios, SolarWinds, and ServiceNow Event Management.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Adept at technical documentation, consultative interactions, and presenting complex ideas in user-friendly language.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects effectively in high-pressure environments.
  • Experienced in team collaboration, mentorship, and leadership.
  • Highly self-motivated with keen attention to detail.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Enterprise Observability & AIOps:
    • Design, implement, and optimize enterprise observability solutions by adopting industry best practices and driving innovation.
    • Evaluate AIOps and observability-related technologies, products, and solutions.
    • Develop and implement end-to-end AIOps strategies and processes.
    • Create target-state AIOps technical design documents and implementation playbooks.
    • Design service mapping and discovery using technologies like ServiceNow and Dynatrace.
    • Configure, customize, and integrate application monitoring tools (Dynatrace, Nagios, AWS CloudWatch, Splunk Cloud, Cribl, SolarWinds, ServiceNow Event Management).
    • Develop and maintain custom extensions for monitoring complex distributed systems.
    • Build and maintain business insights dashboards, telemetry data collection, and streaming pipelines.
    • Develop and implement log ingestion and aggregation strategies, ensuring data availability in centralized logging platforms.
    • Automate workflows and integrations using Python, PowerShell, or other scripting languages.
  • IT Infrastructure & Architecture:
    • Possesses deep technical knowledge in one or more areas: operating platforms (Windows, UNIX, Linux, Active Directory), networking, storage, and cloud technologies.
    • Defines and enforces standards for systems infrastructure.
    • Quickly adapts to and understands new technologies.
    • Manages large, complex IT environments and aligns infrastructure strategies with business objectives.
    • Collaborates with stakeholders to define business requirements and ensure alignment with IT strategies.
    • Provides architectural consulting and guidance to IT and business partners.
    • Develops and maintains an infrastructure capacity plan.
    • Conducts research on emerging technologies and recommends cost-effective, flexible solutions.
    • Analyzes and recommends IT infrastructure investments, including cost reduction opportunities.
    • Develops and executes test plans to assess system performance and identify areas for improvement.
    • Serves as a subject matter expert on enterprise infrastructure hardware and software.
  • Governance, Security & Compliance:
    • Assists in developing and implementing IT policies, including architecture, security, disaster recovery, and service provision.
    • Supports vendor negotiations, outsourcing agreements, and consultant contracts.
    • Ensures compliance with data privacy laws and best practices.
  • Collaboration & Leadership:
    • Shares technical expertise across the enterprise, including vendors and senior leadership.
    • Proactively proposes technical solutions to address business needs.
    • Provides technical training and mentorship to team members.
    • Applies project management skills to medium-to-large initiatives.
    • Engages in cross-departmental and enterprise-wide projects.
    • Promotes best practices in IT infrastructure architecture, engineering, and support.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$109,100.00-$224,000.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.  All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
