About the Role
At Harman International, we are revolutionizing music metadata management and discovery. As a Backend Engineer in our Data Team, you will be at the forefront of building scalable, cutting-edge solutions that power our world-class music metadata services. We are seeking experienced developers passionate about working with data and backend technologies to drive our continued growth and solidify our position as a global leader in music data.
In this role, you will work with the team to design and maintain core catalog ingestion and processing services, develop machine learning models for personalized recommendation systems, and create search functionality that spans the entirety of released music globally. Your work will ensure users can seamlessly discover the music they love by driving backend services that deliver high-quality, accurate data to our product teams reliably. You will collaborate closely with your colleagues in the Data Team and the broader Harman Software Experiences organization, contributing to developing and deploying data-driven features that enhance the user experience.
What You Will Do
- Technical Versatility: Work across various disciplines of within our Data team, including:
- Data Ingestion and Processing: Design, develop, and maintain core catalog data ingestion and processing pipelines, utilizing cloud-based services for scalability and performance.
- Machine Learning: Implement and optimize machine learning processes to enhance personalized recommendation systems.
- Global Music Search: Build and maintain a search infrastructure that allows users to search across all released music on Earth, ensuring high performance and accuracy.
- Full Lifecycle Development: Design, develop, deploy, and operate data-driven services that deliver personalized music experiences directly and indirectly to end-users.
- Leverage Musical Domain Expertise: Acquire and apply deep domain knowledge of musical content to enhance user-facing features.
- Ensure Data Quality: Take full responsibility for the quality of user-facing data, ensuring accuracy, performance, and reliability across all services.
- Innovate and Contribute: Bring fresh ideas and new approaches to the team, driving continuous improvement and innovation.
What You Need
- Experience: 8+ years of experience in backend engineering, with a focus on data engineering, machine learning, or related fields.
- Data Experience: Concrete experience working with data processing, ETLs, and an understanding of best practices for handling large datasets.
- Modern Infrastructure Skills: Experience working with modern infrastructure tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud services at scale.
- Programming Proficiency: Expertise in C# and Python, with a strong foundation in writing efficient, maintainable code for large-scale systems.
- Unix and Database Knowledge: Familiarity with Unix-like environments and proficiency with databases, ensuring smooth interactions between your code and underlying systems.
- Networking Fundamentals: A good understanding of networking, not just in theory but in practice, particularly in how systems communicate.
- Engineering Best Practices: A commitment to sound engineering practices, including testing, performance optimization, resource management, and concurrency handling.
- Batch Processing Knowledge: Hands-on experience with batch processing environments, ensuring data is handled efficiently.
- Service Reliability: Experience delivering and maintaining high-performance, reliable services in production environments.
What is Nice to Have
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related STEM field.
- Experience in a Virtual or Remote work environment in any US time zone.
- A passion for delivering top-notch audio experiences to users and an interest in the audio technology domain.

Salary Ranges:
$ 120,000 - $ 176,000
