Optical Sensing Product Line Manager (PLM):
Job Description:
• Working closely with the other internal and external stakeholders, the successful candidate will help define and drive the product strategy for VIAVI’s optical sensing systems products, including its MicroNIR product line, as well as VIAVI’s forward integration strategy.
• Key responsibilities will include ensuring close alignment between sales, R&D and operations with both short- and long-term customer requirements.
• He/she will also be responsible for all aspects of the broader marketing role Including market trend & competitive analysis, NPI roadmap definition, and business development efforts in new target verticals.
• He/she will also support the execution of the product management team’s staged gate and product roadmap processes while ensuring such processes are aligned with research and development.
• The successful candidate will be instrumental in driving long term organic and inorganic growth within the product line.
This position reports to the Vice President of Product Management, Business Development and Strategy.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide clear strategic and commercial direction to senior OSP leadership for the MicroNIR product line, including the generation and implementation of a compelling 3-year product strategy 
  • Defining VIAVI’s forward integration strategy leveraging VIAVI’s current capabilities designing and manufacturing passive optical components
  • Grow personal presence and senior level relationships at target customers and at relevant ecosystem partners, through a regular cadence of physical and virtual meetings
  • Support sales in the successful negotiation of major customer contracts and commercial awards, thus ensuring profitable growth of the market segment
  • Manage the product life cycle for the MicroNIR family of products in collaboration with other stakeholders including R&D leadership with a focus on next generation technology 
  • Monitor closely market trends to identify new opportunities and mitigate emerging disruptive threats 
  • Identify competitors’ strategies and tactics, and develop plans to increase OSP market share
  • Support the implementation of VIAVI staged gate process, product roadmaps and other business-wide product management initiatives and activities
  • Improve the external visibility of the MicroNIR product line through targeted market communication initiatives

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • BSc/ M.S. in physical science or engineering discipline, with 5+ years’ product management / business development experience in photonics
  • Experience in molecular spectroscopy, preferably NIR, with associated knowledge of technology, markets, applications, and competitors
  • Understanding of optical analytical systems including device electronics and software
  • Proven success in delivering profitable growth in business development and/or product line management role(s); strong network of contacts and prospects a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate contracts and terms of purchase and sale with customers and to work with colleagues to support sales forecasting, financial reporting, product sourcing and other business requirements
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and the ability to create sense and order out of a wide range of inputs from divergent sources
  • Strong communication skills: ability to write and speak clearly about product features and benefits, to write copy for web pages, product announcements, blog posts, and social media
  • Ability to lead via influence across functions
  • Exceptional business strategy and customer relationship skills 
  • Adept at aligning cross-functional teams to execute on growth commitments
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally ~40% 
  • US person with ability to work in ITAR environment
  • Santa Rosa, California location preferred
