Function:

OperationsJob Summary:

Reporting to a supervisor and working 12-hour rotational shifts, the Production Operator (“Operator”) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the production process and its associated equipment in their assigned area(s) of an operating unit. Developing proficiency and safety excellence in all areas of the operating unit through continuous learning is a fundamental element of the operator role. This is a safety sensitive position that is accountable for providing technical support to Engineering, Operations and Maintenance for the plants electrical and instrumentation systems and to provide design input for projects.

Job Description:

  • This is a safety sensitive position that is accountable for providing technical support to Engineering, Operations and Maintenance for the plants electrical and instrumentation systems and to provide design input for projects. 

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

    Champion the pursuit of safety, regulatory compliance and operational excellence including proper use of PPE necessary for each task, implementing established safety procedures and protocols for each job, identifying hazards or incidents, and communicating findings using established procedures. Actively participate in initiatives, programs and projects that promote a safety-first culture.

  • Operate valves, and/or instruments to adjust fluid levels, flows, temperatures, pressures, speeds, and control startups/ shutdowns of mechanical equipment. Make necessary process adjustments via instrumentation, equipment, or chemical additions to maintain processes within operational tolerances.
  • Monitor and inspect equipment, switches, valves, gauges, alarms, safety devices, and meters to ensure processes and equipment is operating efficiently and safely and abnormalities are identified. Perform routine chemical analyses to monitor plant water quality systems.
  • Investigate unusual process or mechanical situations and take or recommend corrective action.
  • Maintain effective communication and collaborate with operations, maintenance, EHS and technical department personnel.
  • Accurately complete work orders and safe work permits to address required maintenance activities. Safely shut down, prepare equipment and return equipment to service or standby mode after maintenance.
  • Achieve and maintain competency in all operator functions of assigned production area, including board operation and assist in the training of less experienced operators.
  • Understand and comply with established processes and procedures designed to support internal controls efforts.  Identify and bring to the attention of management internal controls deficiencies.
  • INCUMBENT ATTRIBUTES: 
  • Grade 12 graduate or GED.
  • Degree or diploma in process technology or a physical sciences discipline is preferred.
  • Analytical skills – ability to accurately apply knowledge of relationships between data and performance.
  • Processing data – accurate and timely data recording, analysis, and communication and results.
  • Operation and control – experience with controlling operations of equipment or systems via instrumentation, equipment, or chemical inputs. Accurately follows safety and operating procedures, control limits and verbal instructions.
  • Work accuracy – knowledge and ability to accurately execute written procedures and verbal instructions.
  • Critical thinking – using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Judgment and decision making - considering the long- and short-term implications of potential actions and their impacts to choose the most appropriate course.
  • Integrity – acts with honesty and consistently follows through in doing what is known to be right in each situation.
  • Teamwork and collaboration – organize, plan and coordinate work with others to ensure alignment with colleagues.  Build partnerships based on trust and respect and inspire the team to act in ways that uphold a culture built on safety and operational excellence.
  • Continuous learning – continually develop knowledge, skills and behaviors related to a role(s) to maintain competency and increase proficiency.
  • Troubleshooting – ability to recognize and troubleshoot equipment failures or process upsets.
  • Capable of routine walking, bending, stooping, lifting to 50 lbs., climbing ladders and stairs, wearing respirators and other personal protective gear and responding to auditory and visual alarms.    POSITION SCOPE/CONTRIBUTION:   
  • An operator plays a major role in helping the company meet its objectives of achieving safety excellence, maximizing production, and maintaining environmental compliance and emergency preparedness.  Applied knowledge of the plant processes, environmental limits and regulations, and ability to apply standard operating procedures and control limits, is fundamental to the safe and efficient operation of the plants.  Operators are required to develop and maintain proficiency in all areas of their assigned plant and operate with more independence as they advance to higher levels. It is an expectation that all Operators achieve a Fully Qualified Operator status. Meetings will be held with you to review your progress toward these job requirements and to identify any resources that may assist you in achieving the required qualifications within expected timelines. Successful operators consistently demonstrate leadership in recognizing and addressing deficient or at-risk conditions, practices or behaviors. Overtime shifts are often required to ensure safe, reliable operations and support maintenance outages and turnarounds.
