The Operations Supervisor is a hands-on role that will have ownership of managing, hiring, training and managing of production workers and transport operations, along with plant responsibilities. Management and performance monitoring of company drivers, dispatch employees, and vehicle fleet are the primary responsibilities of this position. 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Plant operation, plant maintenance and leadership of shift crew; physically on the floor leading by example
  • Compile and monitor site operations metrics and KPI’s, and provide analysis and feedback to managers and supervisors
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving as directed, and have the ability to provide practical solutions in the workplace
  • Management of specific projects, such as, but not limited to: process mapping for the flow of the WashSmart, developing layered audits, and the implementation of 5S.
  • Occasional coverage to Lead Hand roles in order to ensure business continuity 
  • Coordinate internal communication forums, such as “Tailgate Meetings” and Safety Committee Meetings
  • Monitor plant equipment and make minor repairs when possible
  • Training, and developing of all plant floor personnel including but not limited to production associate
  • Organization of staff and resources are effectively utilized
  • Strong team performance is cultivated to achieve equipment delivery on time and to budget
  • Ensure all staff required for transport and plant are appropriately trained and motivated
  • Supervise the activities of the transportation department including the directing, advising, and managing of direct and indirect employees to ensure strong team member performance
  • Establish performance expectations, monitor against expectations, and provide necessary feedback to team members to enhance their growth in position and promotional opportunities
  • Recommend the hiring, promotion, and discharge of team members within the scope of responsibility
  • Monitor workloads placed on drivers by dispatch to ensure they are achievable and align with service commitments to customers
  • Perform regular driver ride-a-longs to assess and monitor performance and gauge customer feedback
  • Provide coverage for routes should a driver call in sick.
  • Address team member and customer complaints, such as, damaged items, driver performance, shipment delays, by conducting a thorough investigation, completing required documentation, and providing a timely resolution
  • Using RPRA app, Geotab to Track and monitor driver activity, such as driver hours, excessive stop times, CVOR performance, etc.
  • Responsible for oversight of vacation and sick time coverage for all driver routes to ensure business continuity
  • Ensure the dispatch department is seamlessly integrated into the entire transportation system always striving for maximum route efficiency and productivity
  • Coordinates route schedules for maximum efficiency and meeting customer requirements
  • Oversee the debrief session feedback between dispatch and drivers to identify issues, leads, and trends to assist with solving customer service issues
  • Implement, monitor and maintain Key Performance Indicators (KPI) measures
  • Prepare reports for management as instructed
  • Provides for team member safety by promoting safe work practices, monitoring compliance with EHS policies, and minimizing physical hazards to ensure an overall safe work environment
  • Ensure minimal errors are made and high quality of customer service is delivered
  • Reduce overtime/manage accurate head count and performance
  • Create cost saving initiatives
  • Perform other duties as required by management

Requirements and Skills

  • 5+ years of leadership experience within a similar operations and/or production field
  • Smith Defensive Driving Training is an asset.
  • Degree in Operations Management or related field
  • Valid Class AZ or DZ Commercial Driver’s License with driving experience deemed an asset and knowledge to safely load and properly block, brace, and secure cargo
  • Strong knowledge of MTO/DOT vehicle and hours of service regulations, and commercial drivers log book requirements
  • Experience in leading and managing small / medium sized work teams
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic medium sized business
  • A proactive, positive and “can do” attitude with a hand on approach
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Be a goal driven and results oriented person
