Our Headquarters is in the greater Washington, DC metro area and is home to over 300 employees. HHMI’s Investment team manages an endowment with net assets of approximately $26 billion, and invests globally through long-term partnerships with world-class external investment managers.  HHMI’s endowment comprises a diverse portfolio, including investments in public equity funds, growth equity and buyout funds, venture capital funds, hedge funds, real assets and direct co-investments.

Summary: 

The Operational Due Diligence Analyst will be part of HHMI’s investment team, supporting the management of its endowment. This role focuses on business and operational due diligence (ODD) across a diverse portfolio. The analyst will assist in evaluating prospective and existing investment managers, conducting operational due diligence across all asset classes, and contributing to investment decision-making and oversight.  

 

This role reports to the Director of Investment Operations and follows a hybrid schedule, with three days per week in person at HHMI’s headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD, and two days remote.

What you’ll do: 

  • Support operational due diligence for prospective and existing external investment managers by reviewing key materials (e.g., audited financials, regulatory filings, fund documents, valuation methodologies, and background checks).  

  • Participate in diligence meetings with investment managers, service providers, and other relevant parties to assess operational risks and identify potential concerns.  

  • Maintain thorough documentation of diligence analysis, findings, and conclusions.  

  • Monitor ongoing investments in line with established policies and engage external partners, such as background check providers and due diligence consultants, to enhance risk analysis. 

  • Travel domestically and internationally (~15-20%) to engage with top-tier investment managers and counterparties. 

  • Stay informed on market developments, industry trends, and regulatory changes that may impact investment managers or due diligence processes. 

  • Assist with ad hoc projects, including internal compliance initiatives. 

 

 

What you bring: 

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Finance or Accounting or a combination of education and equivalent experience. 

  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience. 

  • Operational due diligence, portfolio operations and accounting, or risk reporting experience preferred.  

  • Familiarity with investment strategies. 

  • Strong analytical skills with ability for data reconciliation, aggregation, and presentation.  

  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise analysis. 

  • Exceptional notetaking skills, ensuring accurate collection of key information with attention to detail.  

  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively, handling tasks efficiently while adapting to shifting priorities.  

  • Motivation to thrive in a professional environment that prioritizes excellence, open-minded thinking, and mutual respect. 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite programs. 

 

 

Physical Requirements: 

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Compensation Range

$94,931.20 (minimum) - $118,664.00 (midpoint) - $154,263.20 (maximum)

Annual

HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
