Movement is Life is a multidisciplinary coalition committed to eliminating health disparities due to race, ethnicity, gender, and geography by promoting movement through community-based programs, clinician education, and health policy and advocacy. Governed by a distinguished Board of Directors comprised of leaders representing diverse sectors, their core belief is the necessity of movement, which improves individuals’ overall health and quality of life.  

Movement is Life has been a catalyst for change since 2010, finding ways to impact individuals struggling with joint pain, heart disease, diabete,s and obesity in the short term while long-term solutions are being developed. Their flagship program, Operation Change, offers women ages 45+ in underserved areas a space to manage their health struggles through education, intervention, and social connection. Operation Change raises awareness of disparities in chronic disease management and quality of life.   

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will serve as the leader of the organization, responsible for its overall strategic direction, leadership, and financial health, with a primary focus on fundraising. This role involves developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy to secure financial support from individual donors, foundations, corporations, and government sources. The Executive Director will cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, lead donor engagement efforts, and oversee the planning and execution of fundraising events and campaigns.  

Working closely with the Board of Directors, the ED will set financial goals, monitor progress, and ensure that the organization’s mission is effectively supported through sustainable revenue streams. The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate a track record of success in leading non-profit organizations and a strong understanding of the healthcare landscape. While a background in Health Equity is not required, a deep appreciation for the field and its unique challenges is essential. The candidate will be a trustworthy advisor as they will play a key role in shaping the future of the organization. Finally, as a visionary leader, the ED is outward-facing, engaging with the broader community to advance MIL’s mission while effectively overseeing the organization’s activities in alignment with its governing documents and strategic goals.  

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

Organizational Leadership 

  • Oversee the administration of day-to-day MIL operations, including services, financial resources, personnel, and property. Ensures that activities are properly conducted, reported, and accounted for, to the Board of Directors. 
  • Facilitate the activities of the Board of Directors, Steering Committee, Task Forces, and other leadership groups to support MIL’s mission, vision and goals. 
  • Develop, maintain, and conduct ongoing reviews of governance documents to ensure support for MIL’s strategic direction. 
  • Develop and implement secure systems to ensure data integrity, prevent unauthorized access, and protect MIL’s intellectual property to maintain value and mitigate risk. 
  • Manage and direct all MIL staff, temporary hires, contract employees, and consultants in their roles. Includes hiring, classification, training, growth, conducting performance evaluations, promoting, determining compensation, and terminating MIL employees. 
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and implement MIL's strategic vision, serving as a liaison to execute board policies and evaluating opportunities for growth and impact.
  • Ensure organizational effectiveness by monitoring strategic plan progress, assessing program relevance in light of trends, and establishing a comprehensive volunteer management system.

Fundraising and Board Development

  • Cultivate, steward, and develop new and existing relationships with community partners and funders to reach organizational growth and sustainability goals. 
  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies to secure financial support from various sources, including foundations, corporations, and individual donors. 
  • Create a variety of opportunities to encourage donor contributions to MIL activities and advancement by developing relationships with key donors and cultivating giving and philanthropy in individuals, businesses, and other organizations. 
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors; seek and build Board engagement with strategic direction for effective operations, impactful programming, resource development, and community partnerships. 
  • Work closely with the Board to recruit, develop, support, and retain highly engaged Board members who are to bring adequate resources to the organization. 

Communications & Programming 

  • Develop and manage communication strategies that communicate the value and relevance of MIL to diverse populations to enhance stakeholder retention, recruitment, and overall engagement. 
  • Integrate MIL’s brand in all programs, services, and activities to reinforce the organization’s unique position. 
  • Formulate marketing plans for programs, products, and services to increase brand awareness in furtherance of MIL’s mission. 
  • Identify and evaluate grant opportunities, oversee the submission of LOIs and applications, and manage the tracking, compliance, and reporting processes for awarded grants.
  • Maintain effective relationships with the executives of other organizations related to health equity. 
  • Supervises the planning and delivery of the annual meetings and conferences, including the RFP process, hotel negotiations, and the development of supporting marketing campaigns. 

Financial Management

  • Assist the Board in facilitating financial stability for the organization and its programs, ensuring that all assets are protected and adequately maintained without unnecessary risk. 
  • Supervise all financial planning, budgeting, accounting, auditing, and reporting functions. 
  • Evaluate the impact of economic and budget factors to effectively guide financial planning, investment policies, and financial performance. 
  • Act as MIL’s Contracting Officer, negotiating, reviewing, executing, and administering all contracts on behalf of MIL. 
  • Ensure MIL is in full compliance with all local, state, and federal rules, regulations, and applicable laws. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • A minimum of five (5) years of senior or executive-level experience in nonprofit organizational leadership.
  • Professional experience in health advocacy or health equity is a plus.
  • Proven success in fundraising with an understanding of cultivating and making asks to mid-level donors, major donors, foundations, and corporations.
  • Strong financial acumen and effective communication skills, including the ability to present and report on financial data clearly and concisely. 
  • Demonstrated competency in leadership, project management, and volunteer management. 
  • Proficiency in technology, including databases, websites, and Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent. 
  • A visionary leader who can conceptualize long-term goals and translate them into a succinct, understandable, and actionable framework. 
  • An authentic and effective communicator who can build trust and foster open dialogue is needed to guide an organization toward achieving its mission. 
  • A strategic thinker who uses analysis, project management skills, and budgetary discretion to identify organizational growth opportunities. 
  • A passion and authentic commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to travel an estimated 10-12 days a year within the US.
  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and sensitivity to the needs of underrepresented populations.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS 

The Executive Director role offers a competitive base salary range of $150,000 to $185,000 accompanied by a competitive benefits package. This position is remote within the United States with domestic travel required about 10 – 12 days a year.
