About Atomic Machines:
Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era in micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler (MC) technology. The MC enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The MC promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing both for the many device classes that never could be made by semiconductor methods but also to open up entirely new classes. Furthermore, the MC is fully digital in the way 3D printing is digital, but where 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the MC is a multi-process, multi-material technology: bits and raw materials go in and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler – that we will be unveiling to the world soon.
Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.
About This Role:
- We are seeking an experienced, senior Modeling and Simulation Engineer to join our growing team within the AI and ModSim group. An ideal candidate should have experience in developing both mathematical and numerical models involving multiple connected physics domains. You should feel comfortable identifying critical system attributes of an existing device or a future concept and use them to derive a first or higher order parametric model to support the company’s efforts in performance optimization, process sensitivity analysis, optimal design etc. Experience with modeling concepts (equivalent circuit modeling, multiscale modeling, etc.) and a variety of software tools (COMSOL, Ansys, Spice, etc.) is important to be successful in this role. You will be required to have an in-depth understanding of the governing physics over multiple domains, with strong emphasis on electro-magnetism and thermal effects. Familiarity with structural mechanics and computational fluid dynamics is required as well. The length scales involved range from sub-micron to the full size of our devices, which can be several millimeters to centimeters. This is an excellent career opportunity for a professional with a proven track record of creating high-quality, validated multiphysics models, who is excited about using their skillset to help create new classes of devices to be fabricated and manufactured at scale on our revolutionary manufacturing platform. The ideal applicant thrives in a highly collaborative workplace, actively engages in the development process and is excellent at documenting and presenting work products.
What you’ll do:
- Determine critical system attributes and set up analytical models covering multiple physics domains for existing and future devices, with particular emphasis on electromagnetic and thermal effects.
- Define figures of merit and boundary/operating conditions based on system and requirements as well as input from other engineers.
- Set up multiphysics simulations for electromagnetism (and beyond) via Finite Elements and/or Finite Volumes models for static, transient, and harmonic analyses to aid design and process decisions.
- Deliver executable computational models to support the company’s efforts in process sensitivity analysis, optimal design, and other engineering analyses as needed to improve robustness of designs and processes.
- Systematically document methods and their validation. Document and visualize results and present findings and recommendations to the team.
- Recommend model validation experiments and use results of such experiments to validate and improve models.
- Work collaboratively in cross-functional engineering teams with prototype engineers, device designers and software, electrical and mechanical engineers.
- Train other engineers in modeling and simulation tools.
What you’ll need:
- 6+ years of hands-on experience building multiphysics analytical models and simulations.
- Strong foundation in multiphysics models, with strong emphasis on electrostatic, electromagnetic, piezoelectric, piezoresistive, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and structural mechanics.
- FEA experience using COMSOL and/or Ansys in multiple coupled physics (experience with Abaqus, Siemens products, etc. is appreciated as well). Being resourceful, flexible and adaptable; no task is too big or too small.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently and/or cross-functionally.
- Masters or Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
Bonus points for:
- Experience with SPICE-based circuit simulation or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling.
- Programming experience, particularly in Python scripting.
- Experience in computer aided design (CAD) using Fusion 360, SolidWorks, NX or other CAD tools.
- Experience with data visualization and analysis tools such as JMP, Matlab, Pandas, matplotlib, etc.
- Industry experience in product development processes such as Agile, ICSM, etc.
- Experience with MEMS.

What We Do
Atomic Machines is redefining humanity’s relationship with matter. We see a future where our tools will allow us to reorganize matter at the atomic level at will, where we will go from bits to atoms for any object or machine that can be designed in alignment with physical laws. We have begun our journey with the development of a robotic manufacturing platform capable of making an entirely new class of micro-electromechanical (MEMS) devices. We are well funded and have exceptionally strong product/market fit and a clear go-to-market path for the device we will make first with our platform. Our platform breaks traditional manufacturing paradigms and constraints, enabling inexpensive rapid prototyping as well as large scale manufacturing with highly compelling economics.
Joining forces with us means becoming part of an incredibly talented, inventive and passionate multi-disciplinary team working on a massive world-changing mission. You will have the opportunity to help define the company from its early days. You’ll be challenged to learn and grow as a builder and a leader as the company itself grows rapidly. And you will receive significant equity compensation - you’ll truly be a company owner and benefit financially from our overall success.
