Boston Dynamics is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Manager to join our Spot team. You will lead a team that produces extremely high-quality hardware on groundbreaking robots operating in the industrial world. In this role, you and your team will design and develop complex electromechanical subsystems from concept through to sustainment. You will enjoy both managing and guiding the team as well as doing some level of engineering, systems engineering and hands-on work. How you will make an impact:

  • Lead a team of engineers to design and develop complex electromechanical subsystems from concept through to sustainment

  • Work with cross functional teams including engineering, operations, manufacturing,  suppliers, machinists, contract manufacturers, logistics and supply chain

  • Receive objective based assignments, and determine resources to meet schedules and goals

  • Collaborate with other managers and engineers on hard design problems

  • Guide design trades

  • Oversee and/or perform system design analyses, including reliability, design-for-manufacture, design-for-assembly, cost-takeout, etc.

  • Oversee and often design and release of components and systems using CATIA

  • Oversee the development of production and support documentation including bills of material (BoMs), assembly drawings, and maintenance instructions.

  • Plan and/or perform verification and validation activities on prototype and production systems

  • Work across disciplines to understand failure modes and design tests to validate design performance objectives

  • Provide guidance to subordinates within the latitude of established company policies

Desired skills:

  • BSME and minimum 6 years of relevant experience (including MSME/PhD degrees with professional engineering experience)

  • Minimum 2 years of experience leading a team of engineers in a professional and product driven environment

  • Broad technical knowledge of complex systems

  • System level engineering experience

  • Advanced CATIA user or equivalent (NX, Solidworks, etc.), including finite element analysis, 2D drawings, simulations,

  • Familiarity with PLM systems, (Arena preferred),  and ECO process

  • Experience designing motion control systems with sensors, actuators and complex mechanisms

  • Experience designing systems that are used in industrial settings

  • A working knowledge of ASME drafting standards including GD&T, (Y14.5-2018)

  • A working knowledge of DFM/A and statistical tolerance analysis

  • A working knowledge of structured problem solving methods including 8D and Ishikawa diagrams, (fishbone), and Six Sigma

  • A working knowledge of failure avoidance methods including DFMEA/PFMEA and fault tree analysis

  • High level of technical writing proficiency (specs, test plans, reports, white papers, etc.)
