-
Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.
Background
The reliable measurement of the rotor mast bending moment is crucial for monitoring loads for lifetime calculations and allowing condition-based maintenance activities. While the existing mast moment system utilizes electrical strain gauges that are glued within the rotor mast to directly determine its bending moment, recent activities have focused on an indirect measurement device that uses fibre optic strain sensors on the rotor blade to infer the corresponding mast bending moment from local strain measurements.
Objectives of the thesis
The aim of this thesis is to develop a relationship between strain measurements collected on the rotor blade and the mast bending moment. The dependencies on key flight parameters shall be identified analytically (e.g. rotor speed, collective angle) and methods based on machine learning, neural networks or similar shall be applied to accurately predict the mast bending moment. Finally, the proposed methods shall be validated with existing flight test data and whirl tower test data.
Your tasks and responsibilities
-
Familiarization with systems, such as main rotor system, main rotor drive, main rotor mast and instrumentation system.
-
Literature review on suitable machine learning techniques for accurate parameter estimation.
-
Elaboration of analytical relationship between flap moment and mast bending moment to identify influencing flight parameters.
-
Development of a predictive model to determine the mast bending moment magnitude and azimuth angle based on rotor blade-based strain measurements.
-
Model validation with electrical strain gauge measurements from whirl tower tests and conclusions.
Desired skills and qualifications
-
Enrolled full-time student (d/f/m) in the area of Structural mechanics / Loads or an equivalent field of study
-
Basic knowledge in statistics and Matlab scripting
-
Optional: Knowledge in metrology and Python scripting
-
You can work independently within data analysation and researching
-
