Job Description:

The Managing Editor is responsible for steering all operations in the editorial office of differences: A Journal of Feminist Cultural Studies, which publishes three issues per year with Duke University Press, maintains an active online forum, and organizes an annual colloquium. The Managing Editor oversees all editorial functions including acquisitions and production. Acquisition includes vetting submissions and managing peer review according to scholarly publishing best practices. Production entails fact checking, copy editing, preparing manuscripts for typesetting, and reading and collating page proofs. The incumbent liaises with editors, reviewers, authors, and the scholarly community and serves as the point person in all relations with the press, including editorial, production, design, marketing, and fulfillment. The person in this position is also responsible for soliciting, editing, and publishing scholarly content for the journal’s online forum; managing social media accounts; overseeing graduate proctors serving as assistant editors; and scheduling, setting the agenda for, and chairing meetings with the full editorial team. The Managing Editor ensures that press deadlines are met and page limits respected.

This is a fixed-term position, renewable annually to June 30, 2028, dependent on funding.

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree and three to five years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. PhD in the humanities preferred.

  • Excellent written skills and an impeccable knowledge of grammar and punctuation.

  • Expert command of MLA and Chicago writing style(s).

  • Strong background in critical theory and cultural studies.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a deadline-driven environment.

  • Proficiency in the use of Word, Excel, Acrobat, Photoshop, Trello, FileMaker Pro, and other relevant software and platforms.

  • Familiarity with HTML and Javascript.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage social media engagement across multiple platforms.

  • Strong proficiency in using web content management systems to maintain online content.

  • Ability to manage the work of staff with overlapping deadlines.
