Purpose of the Position :

  • Manages & supports processes in the area of new catalysts for processing of renewable feedstock (oils & fats) & sustainable catalytic technologies for other applications, which contribute to the innovation and development of a major strategic growth initiative in the BL Catalysts and contributes to long term economic success and growth of the company

  • Ensures that through the successful processing of strategic R&D projects with internal and external partners new businesses are developed for Evonik Industries and can be successfully implemented

  • supports that an innovation strategy for the business line in the strategic growth initiative is developed, and ensures that the innovation strategy in the growth initiative is continuously improved and implemented in the field of research and development

  • ensures jointly with the BL’s relevant PT functions that manufacturing processes in the area of responsibility are continuously improved regarding sustainability, economics and product quality

  • Ensures that technical services and applied technology services for the business line in the area of responsibility are developed, continuously improved and implemented and that business lines sales and manufacturing activities are technically supported.

Key Responsibilities:

Coordination and scientific management for chemical, technical and applied technology projects; development of new and improved catalysts and catalytic processes with core tasks such as:

  • Management of important, complex, regional or company / BL-wide R&D projects with a project team which consists of corporate employees, company internal and external cooperation partners (such as Creavis, Process Technology, other BL's, universities, research institutes, industrial cooperation partners) within an approved budget.

  • Establishment, guidance and management of external R&D cooperation.

  • Support & management of new regional and international business opportunities.

  • Functional and disciplinary responsibility for laboratories

  • Functional supervision of regional & international internal and external laboratories, engineering and R&D teams, based on the well - recognized and known expertise on the function's field of work.

  • Support on holistic patent protection of the created R&D results and the relevant areas, including the patent strategies in cooperation with IPM.

  • Coordination of applied technology related tasks in cooperation with technology partners and the business; close cooperation with Marketing, Sales and Production.

  • Contact to important internal and external customers for the representation of the field of work and the products of the area of responsibility.

  • Operational development of new or broad optimization of current analysis methods.

  • Improvement and development of manufacturing processes and production recipes considering sustainability, economics and product quality.

  • Project responsibility for mid-scale capex projects (e.g. plant re-design / re-structuring) up to 1.0 Mio. € and for strategic development projects.

  • ESHQ responsibility for the laboratories and pilot plants and responsibility to manage a suitable subordinate organization

  • Cost center responsibility.

  • Prepare, publish, present technical papers and represent Evonik at major conferences that enhance Evonik’s reputation in the field of catalysis.

Education, Certification and/or relevant experience required

  • Doctorate from Research Institute/University in Chemistry/Chemical engineering within catalysis research area with industrial experience of >3years.

Additional skills and abilities required for this position

  • Broad working knowledge of chemistry, material science and/or heterogeneous catalysis

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead global, multifunctional project teams of technical experts

  • Ability to work in a detailed oriented environment

  • Demonstrated aptitude for handling multiple technical support and R&D project-related activities simultaneously and with minimal supervision

Technical Knowledge 

  • Expertise in material science and/or Homogeneous catalysis and/or Heterogeneous catalysis.
