Job SummaryThe SBA Underwriting Manager leads the SBA underwriting team for Business Lending. This role manages the underwriting process to ensure timely movement and communication of Small Business Administration (SBA) loan requests and decisions. This individual reports to the Director Business Lending Credit and is responsible for the development and growth of each team member. Key responsibilities include managing internal credit workflow, partnering with peer underwriting and other business lending leaders, providing initial and ongoing training to the SBA underwriting team and maintaining the highest level of operational excellence.

- Team Leadership and Management:
- Lead the SBA underwriting team, communicate performance expectations and hold team members accountable
- Oversee development, training, workflow, and scheduling to meet individual and team goals
- Monitor and track productivity and efficiency of each team member, identifying needs for training and development
- Responsible for internal reporting to monitor progress of business loans through the underwriting phase
- Credit Review, Underwriting and Loan Decisioning:
- Maintain an expert knowledge in SBA lending, including commercial, construction and other specialty lending areas
- Responsible for credit reviews for new SBA loan requests
- Ensure complete, consistent and accurate underwriting and credit analysis for all SBA loan requests; ensure appropriate strengths and weaknesses with proper mitigation within credit presentation
- Has shared responsibility for SBA eligibility for each loan originated in the SBA portfolio and ensures all SBA underwriting standards are adhered to
- May approve Business Lending loans up to designated approval limit
- Compliance, Reporting, and Collaboration
- Collaborate with Business Lending management, peer leadership, and other teams to ensure compliance and consistency in practices, procedures, and risk management across Business Lending, Special Assets, and Compliance
- Develop and maintain internal reporting to track the progress of loans through the underwriting phase, ensuring transparency and accuracy
- Foster open communication and engagement with teams impacted by underwriting, including sales, closing, portfolio management, and construction, to promote alignment and efficiency
- Support loan review, exam and audit preparedness by ensuring responsive coordination and consistent practices
- Maintain proficient knowledge of the loan origination and core systems to uphold operational excellence and compliance
- SBA SOP Understanding & Training:
- Serve as a subject matter expert on SBA underwriting standards, policies, and credit structures, ensuring adherence to the SBA SOP
- Support the SBA Program Administrator in educating the team on SBA policies and procedural changes
- Vendor and Budget Management:
- Assist in monitoring performance of and maintaining lists of approved vendors, including real estate, equipment and business valuation appraisers, environmental firms, flood and UCC search providers
- Ensure the team operates within established budgets, policies, procedures, practices, and regulations
- Special Projects and Expertise:
- Serve as lead on any special projects, as directed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

Experience
- 5 years of progressive experience in a financial environment. Demonstrated experience in SBA lending, real estate lending, commercial lending, construction lending and related loan products preferred.
- 1-2 years of leadership experience. Significant business-related experience preferred.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in business, marketing, finance, economics or related field. A master’s degree in business or finance preferred. Education will be verified. An additional four years in a progressive financial setting may be substituted for a relevant degree.

Estimates structural and personnel needs and assigns work to meet those needs. Leads, coordinates and reviews the work of assigned staff. Determines goals to be reached and leads the achievement of goals. Recommends candidates for employment, conducts performance evaluations and salary reviews for staff, and applies company policy.
Computer/Office Equipment Skills
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Experience with analytical and reporting software and loan origination systems
- Knowledge of credit bureau systems and financial calculators
Language Skills
- Demonstrated ability to clearly express ideas, methodology, results and recommendations verbally, in writing and through insightful reports and graphic illustrations
- Demonstrated ability to document outcomes and present information in a manner appropriate for key stakeholders and all levels of the organization
Other Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of Federal, State, SBA and NCUA regulations and other guidelines pertaining to business lending
- Maintain in-depth understanding and knowledge of financial statement principles and credit analysis (income statements, balance sheets and cash flow analysis, etc.)
- Excellent inter-personal skills including the ability to lead and collaborate with ad-hoc teams
- Self-starter with strong organization and time management skills and the ability to work productively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects and timelines
- Adaptive to change, responds positively to altered circumstances or conditions
- Possess a desire and willingness to learn and continually update knowledge base on financial concepts, strategies, systems etc.
- Demonstrated judgement skills to make quick decisions within or outside written policy and procedures
- Demonstrated knowledge of review and negotiation of corporate contracts and agreements with complex terms and conditions
- Take initiative to be a problem solver and provide suggestions to improve processes and efficiencies
