A day in the life of a Capital One of a Risk Manager
The Capital One Canada Risk Office is responsible for managing and executing risk management activities,
such as: risk assessment programs, risk event governance, controls governance, and controls testing. The Risk
Office Testing Team conducts testing of control activities to assess whether controls are designed and
operating effectively.
The Testing Team Manager will be responsible for leading a team of Control Testers in the execution of
control testing activities and for the design and ongoing improvement of testing methodologies in alignment
with Capital One's Control Standard and other applicable policies. The Manager will also contribute to
strengthening the overall control environment by identifying opportunities to improve controls and risk office
processes while balancing business value and overall risk appetite.
Here's What You'll Need To Be Successful:
- Inspire and empower a team of associates, leading a culture of collaboration, continuous growth, and excellence in controls testing
- Provide thought leadership and guidance to team members in the design, strategy, and execution of controls testing
- Ownership of first line controls testing activities and testing calendar
- Evolve the mandate, practices, and talent within the testing team to ensure resilience of the testing program
- Develop and enhance local testing processes by leveraging industry leading practices and regulatory expectations to drive improvements in Canada's testing programs and processes
- Collaborate with control owners to prepare for and facilitate testing activities and provide guidance and recommendations following testing completion
- Collaborate with second line testing groups to align on the interpretation of Enterprise Risk
- Standards and discuss trends in testing
- Collaborate with and lead discussions with business management on test results, including issues and recommendations identified to ensure results are well-grounded
- Conduct management review of tester workpapers and results
- Manage test schedules to ensure all test results are completed within established timeframes and documented within systems of record
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with Compliance Advisory, Legal, and the business
- Lead and drive the implementation of testing innovation/RegTech capabilities for Canada
- Participate in, lead, and/or execute other risk management initiatives for the team as assigned
- Prepare accurate and high-quality reports and briefing materials appropriate to a senior management audience
- Remain current on risk management trends, best practices, and guidelines issued by applicable regulatory bodies and the industry
Your Responsibilities:
- A solid understanding of risk management and governance principles and familiarity with the processes and controls that govern these activities (i.e., three lines of defense model and risk framework principles)
- At least 5 years of people leadership experience, including experience leading a controls testing team
- At least 5 years of experience in a second line testing function or an audit/examiner role
- Experience testing a variety of controls, including manual controls, script-based controls, and technology/automated controls
- Experience in a QA/Testing function in a technology team
- Demonstrated business maturity with the ability to effectively communicate with and influence stakeholders within all levels of the organization, establish and maintain positive relationships
- Exceptional communication and influence to drive action and understanding of controls-related issues and opportunities across all levels of the organization
- The ability to distill complex information into a clear and concise narrative
- Superior writing and editing skills with the ability to construct well-founded, clear, and concise analyses and recommendations
- The ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects and deliverables
- Solid analytical and investigative skills
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- At least 5 years of experience working in risk management, audit, and/or compliance; 3 of which should be in a testing or quality assurance capacity
- Experience in preparing and writing business documents (i.e., presentations for leadership meetings or forums, briefing memos, and reports)
- Familiarity with applicable Canadian regulators (OSFI, OPC, FCAC) and regulations that apply to a credit card business
- Experience in process or project management
Preferred Qualifications

- Relevant certification or accreditation in Compliance, Risk Management, Legal, or other related fields
- Strong leadership skills and capabilities
- Familiarity of a credit card business, practices, and operations
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively withstakeholders and cross-functional team
