The Bay Area News Group is currently seeking an experienced Machinist to work within a team based, self-managing environment in our Concord facility to provide well maintained equipment in order to produce high quality product on time and within budget restraints.
What you will do:

  • Monitor and trouble shoot newspaper production equipment during operation to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation or replacement; and repair faulty equipment or systems
  • Work with chemicals to clean and prepare machinery for repairs and machining
  • Perform basic repairs and maintenance offline, and emergency repairs under deadline pressure
  • Clean up tasks on press, warehouse, auxiliary equipment as necessary, including daily, weekly and monthly preventative maintenance tasks
  • Electronic or mechanical devices including tools, hardware, software and other equipment used in the performance of the essential functions of this position include the following: Unit Control Panels, Advanced Press Control Systems, Calibration equipment, Precision measuring equipment, Basic hand tools, Variety of machine shop tools, PCs and Database Program Entry, and Forklift/Clamp truck
  • Work night, weekend and holiday shifts as required; regular and reliable attendance is a necessary element of this job


What you will bring:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and work within deadlines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with multiple levels of management and across teams
  • Knowledge of printing and post print support equipment helpful
  • Comfortable working with PC's and computer driven equipment
  • Ability to work on multiple concerns simultaneously, excellent time management skills
  • Be a self-starter and able to work well independently
  • Dependable with excellent attendance, including nights, weekends and holidays
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; post secondary schooling in mechanics and / or machining is desired
  • Minimum of two years of experience as a Maintenance Mechanic or Machinist on production equipment required


Work Environment:

  • This job operates in a printing plant environment. The environment within the newspaper is well lit. Working areas may be tight, small and below machinery
  • Must be able to work with chemicals, loud noise, dusty area and moving parts safely while using the appropriate PPE
  • This role routinely uses forklifts, ladders, tools and equipment but also standard office equipment such as computers, phones and photocopiers
  • This job is not a remote position; employee will report to our Concord, CA printing plant


The hourly wage is $29.00 - $31.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).

The majority of our roles are 100% remote excluding Production & Circulation although some roles require customer visits or occasional in office work. We do not have any intention of returning to an in office environment/culture.
