About the Role
As a Legal Counsel at payabl., you will be instrumental in providing comprehensive legal support for our Cyprus office and international operations. You will play a key role in ensuring legal and regulatory compliance, negotiating commercial agreements, and supporting the company’s strategic initiatives in fintech and payment services. Your expertise in commercial law, financial regulations, and cross-border operations will contribute to the company’s growth and operational success.
Reporting Line: Lead Legal Counsel
You will:
- Provide legal support to our Cyprus office and international entities, ensuring compliance with Cypriot and EU financial regulations. Offer legal guidance on business strategies, regulatory developments, and operational matters.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of legal agreements, including merchant acquirer agreements, payment services partnerships, PSP agreements, vendor agreements, software licensing, referral, reseller, and partnership contracts.
- Advise on Cypriot and European financial services regulations, ensuring the company’s operations align with Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) requirements, EU directives, and industry best practices. Assist in developing and implementing compliance frameworks, policies, and procedures.
- Provide legal guidance on the company’s international service offerings, assessing regulatory risks and ensuring legal compliance across multiple jurisdictions, particularly within the EU.
- Assist in the development, review, and implementation of corporate policies, procedures, and internal controls to mitigate legal and regulatory risks.
- Support the management of legal disputes, regulatory inquiries, and potential litigation matters, working closely with external counsel when necessary.
- Oversee legal aspects of special projects while managing day-to-day legal matters. Work closely with internal teams across different departments and locations, providing legal insight on strategic initiatives and company-wide projects.
What we want:
- Qualified lawyer with a strong academic background and 5+ years of post-qualification experience in Cyprus.
- Experience in commercial and technology contracts, e-commerce, fintech, payments, and data privacy is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of Card Schemes (e.g., Visa, Mastercard) is a significant advantage.
- Familiarity with financial services regulations in Cyprus, the EU, or the UK is beneficial.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple tasks efficiently.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines consistentlty.

🚀 Hiring Process:
1️⃣ First Interview: Conducted by the Talent Acquisition team (30-40 min).
2️⃣ Second Interview: 1-hour deep-dive with the Hiring Manager, our Lead Legal Counsel
3️⃣ Final Behavioural Interview: Focused team fit, with participation from the Head of Talent Acquisition and the Group Chief Corporate Officer.
