Position Overview:Reporting to Finning Canada’s Associate General Counsel, this position supports the delivery of legal services to Finning Canada, its affiliates, subsidiaries and related entities. This position is also involved in day to day leadership and coaching in support of Finning's strategic priorities.
Job Description:
Providing support to the Associate General Counsel and Senior Legal Counsel by providing legal advice and internal coordination on all day-to-day legal matters affecting Finning Canada’s operations.
- Corporate & commercial matters, including contract drafting, review and negotiation of sales and rental contracts with Finning customers and procurement contracts with Finning suppliers.
- Human resources matters, including general employment law matters; employment contracts; employee discipline and dismissal; employment standards complaints; human rights complaints, workplace accommodation; and workplace policies, including, anti-harassment, and drug, alcohol and cannabis testing.
- Instructing and overseeing external legal counsel retained for general litigation, including wrongful dismissal claims and debt collections.
- Insurance claims and process.
- General commercial leasing matters.
- Other legal work as delegated from time to time.

Knowledge:
- Proven experience as legal counsel in a face paced and dynamic business environment.
- Demonstrated ability to create legally defensive or proactive strategies.
- Strong knowledge of legislation, jurisprudence and case law relevant to the practice areas.

- Being proactive and objective in meeting and managing the organization’s legal requirements.
- Providing legally sound and practical advice.
- Ensuring that legal files are maintained and accessible.
- Represent the company ethically and professionally.
- Maintain and enhance the reputation of Finning Legal and the company in the community.
- Ensure the status of all legal matters and any costs or risks are reported accurately to the Associate General Counsel and Senior Legal Counsel.
- Always perform duties with the utmost professionalism and highest ethical standards.
Education & Experience:
- Law degree from a recognized institution and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta
- 3 to 6 years (post-call) of experience in private practice preferably with a national or strong regional firm focused on business law, or an in-house setting in a comparable business or that involves sophisticated contracts or commercial transactions
