The One Legal team at Equinix seeks a Legal Counsel, Privacy to support our global Data & Privacy Office (“DPO”) in its compliance efforts in the Asia Pacific region. This role will be based in Singapore and will report into our Global Head, Data & Privacy Office based in London.

Responsibilities

  • Providing day to day support for global data privacy and related issues, acting as an Asia Pacific region (“AP”) data privacy laws SME (covering all jurisdictions where Equinix operates) and a key member of the global DPO, playing a meaningful role in the ongoing risk management and continued implementation and maintenance of a global privacy program. Specific areas of responsibility will include:

    • data breach management, policy development, customer contract support and vendor management; and

    • assessing and mitigating privacy risks, conducting privacy impact assessments, and developing privacy frameworks.

  • Develop and maintain subject matter expertise in and advise on the impact of data privacy and other select laws and regulations that fall within the scope of the DPO (such as data governance, cybersecurity and AI) (“DPO Laws”), and as they apply to our business in AP and globally, in coordination with business teams.

  • Advising on data privacy and data governance issues affecting Equinix's business (and related issues faced by our customers and our role in their own data privacy compliance) to support the business strategy and goals of Equinix globally; types of business activities that this role will support includes drafting and negotiating data protection provisions/agreements, conducting privacy due diligence for M&A deals, and advising on data transfers across borders.

  • Learning about the processes and tools within the DPO that are used to mitigate Equinix’s data privacy risk and manage ongoing compliance with DPO Laws, and working with business partners to embed processes and tools in our day-to-day business activity.

  • Identifying and managing any data privacy and related issues notified to the DPO and areas of risk within Equinix that do not align with current data privacy policies, processes and DPO Laws, and developing appropriate solutions to deliver ‘privacy by design’ to address non-compliance.

  • Ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams (such as InfoSec, HR, Marketing, and other parts of One Legal) to ensure alignment and effective implementation of DPO policies and procedures.

  • Manage compliance with DPO Laws and Equinix policies through Equinix’s entry into new markets, support of corporate M&A deals, new product launches and the integration of acquired businesses.

  • Provide globally aligned and consistent guidance and support to Equinix’s global business and operations.

  • Help develop and deliver privacy and other related trainings related to DPO Laws.

  • Keep abreast of changes to DPO Laws to assess applicability to Equinix and support on-going compliance.

  • Manage external legal counsel across AP/globally where necessary to provide legal support for the business activities.

  • Think creatively and devise solutions to challenging problems, including making and articulating determinations regarding risks and benefits.

  • Exercise mature and reliable judgment while enjoying Equinix’s enthusiastic, informal and fast-paced environment.

  • Flexibility and desire to work on challenging and new projects to support a lean and highly efficient legal team.

  • Willingness to develop new areas of expertise and solve a wide variety of problems both within and outside of your comfort zone.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.

  • Membership in good standing of any global legal regulatory bar/organization.

  • Circa 5+ years of relevant law firm or in-house experience advising on compliance with a broad range of AP and global privacy and related laws and regulations (e.g. GDPR, PDPC, DPDP, PIPL, cybersecurity laws, AI related laws).

  • Demonstrated tech savvy with an ability to understand Equinix’s current and planned future product and service offerings at a level sufficient to interface with experts and analyze regulatory implications.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Commitment to and experience of ownership for proactively delivering high standards of work product and deliverables in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating accountability and the ability to thrive under pressure.

  • Ability to navigate competing workflows, set appropriate priorities with clients and deliver results within agreed timelines.

  • Bonus points for:

    • Familiarity with data centers and the colocation or telecommunications industries or experience advising internet, social media or technology companies.

    • Experience working in a culturally diverse and global company.

    • CIPP or equivalent certifications.
