About the Role, Mission or Department Overview

As the Leave Administration Supervisor, you will provide overall direction for the leave administration department and oversee all aspects of our employee leave programs, including FMLA, multiple state-specific family and parental leaves, disability, and other company-specific types of leave. You will help maintain accurate leave records, facilitate communication between employees and management, promote a positive leave experience for all employees, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local leave regulations. You will report to the Senior Manager of Employee Services.

You will be in a hybrid position, which includes regular attendance to the Norfolk, VA office 3 days per week with the flexibility to work remotely for the remaining 2 days per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage employee leave programs, including FMLA, state family leave, disability, parental leave, and other state or local leave programs, from the initial request through the return to work. You will be in a hybrid position, which includes regular attendance to the Norfolk, VA office 3 days per week with the flexibility to work remotely for the remaining 2 days per week.
  • Provide direction, determine priorities, and monitor the daily activities of the leave administration department to ensure accurate processing of leave requests.
  • Develop the leave administration team on all aspects of leave administration.
  • Be the primary subject matter expert for the department and the central contact for all leave administration-related escalations. 
  • Approve payrolls to ensure accurate calculations and processing of leave-related adjustments and payments.
  • Collaborate with Occupational Health, Legal, HR Business Partners, and other partners to ensure seamless coordination of leave-related activities.
  • Produce reports and analytics related to leave usage, trends, and patterns to support decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Demonstrates support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in leave administration or a related HR Position, with an understanding of leave laws and regulations.
  • In-depth knowledge of FMLA, multi-state Paid Family Leave (NY & CA preferred), and other relevant federal/state leave laws.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience of management experience.
  • 2+ years of experience using Workday or other HCM experience.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $85,000.00 - $105,000.
