ERM is hiring a highly skilled and experienced Lead Wetland Delineator to join our team in Raleigh, NC regionally with travel to Richmond, VA. The successful candidate will lead monitoring activities, conduct habitat assessments, and compile survey reports. This role requires extensive fieldwork in variable weather conditions and challenging terrain. This is a full-time (50+ hours per week) limited-term role, with a duration of 3 months, extendable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead monitoring activities for the assigned team.
  • Conduct habitat assessments and document geophysical characteristics of waterbodies.
  • Estimate absolute percent vegetation ground cover and percent composition by dominant species.
  • Identify dominant species by strata and make hydrophytic vegetation determinations.
  • Determine wetland community type using Cowardin (1979), Circular 39 (USFWS, 1956), and Eggers and Reed (2014) classifications.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of local flora, including identification of native and non-native plant species.
  • Utilize regional dichotomous keys and herbarium work to identify unknown plant species.
  • Perform data entry, data review, and use GPS technology for accurate mapping.
  • Compile comprehensive survey reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in botany, ecology, or a related science field and 5 years of experience, or 10 years of equivalent professional or academic experience in wetlands.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local flora and ability to identify plant species.
  • Familiarity with soils and hydrology.
  • Working knowledge of sub-meter accuracy GPS technologies and map interpretation skills (e.g., NWI, USGS, aerial photography).
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and on challenging terrain.
  • Ability to work weekends and regularly over 50 hours per week.
  • Ability to work in the field for extended periods.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with habitat assessments and wetland community type determinations.
  • Proficiency in using regional dichotomous keys and herbarium work.
  • Strong data management and report compilation skills.
