JOB DESCRIPTION
The UL Solutions R&D team is seeking to add expertise in our Electrical and Mechanical R&D team to support UL Solutions power and controls business, with a focus in circuit protection devices. The role is involved regular collaboration with technical and business development leaders within the business as well as with UL Solutions' customers. The position will focus on the development of new service offerings, revision/improvement of existing test methods, providing unique solutions for customers, and to provide thought leadership to UL Solutions' technical community and as input into corporate strategy development.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the key R&D subject matter expert in the power and controls space, with an emphasis in circuit protection devices.
  • Under direction of R&D and business leadership, lead execution of R&D projects that advance business development, principal engineering, or customer strategic priorities.
  • Develop professional network with internal and external technical experts; leverage network to identify internal project needs, and to identify opportunities to service customer needs.
  • Identify gaps in R&D and business unit technical capabilities and lead effort to close such gaps.
  • Applies intensive and diverse knowledge of engineering concepts to the specific research tasks.
  • Exercises a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad engineering research concepts and guiding the analysis of unique problems and developing new and improved techniques and methods.
  • Stays ahead of changing technologies, in the field by reading journals and scientific publications, attending academic conferences, writing and collaborating on original publications, and delivering presentations on research engineering topics.
  • Plan, design and complete initial and follow-up procedures as needed to test and validate results.
  • Collaborates with industry, academics and other research and development staff to apply the results of research used to develop new techniques, products, practices and new services and standards.
  • Maintain and develop extensive knowledge of current and new technologies for new products, as well as current needs and trends.
  • Maintains personal professional network with colleagues outside team and outside company.
  • With direction, works directly with COU/technical leadership in context of research work.
  • Leads others to solve complex problems; uses sophisticated analytical thought to exercise judgement and identify innovative solutions.
  • Communicates difficult concepts and negotiates with others to adopt a different point of view.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics required. Master's or PhD preferred.
  • 3+ years of manufacturing and/or research experience in power and controls.
  • Technical writing proficiency in English.
  • Strong skills in design-of-experiment.
  • Demonstrates both hands-on/laboratory and theoretical abilities.
  • Proficient in design-of-experiment and project execution..
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and maintain personal network.
  • Strong data interpretation and trend analysis.
  • Works independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations. Interprets internal/external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes or services.
