SP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering over £10 bn of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years, contributing to the UK’s target of Net Zero. A major part of this is delivery of the EGL4 HVDC link in Joint Venture with National Grid. 

Reporting to the Engineering Section Head, you will be responsible for developing and delivering Protection & Control engineering solutions, from feasibility to detailed engineering design of EGL4 project. To also provide the necessary basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs for project(s), innovation, effective technical support, advice, coaching and input throughout the lifecycle of a portfolio of other projects. Responsible for developing less experienced staff within the department or project team. 

Leading the Protection & Control assessment of the contract bids for the EGL4 and other portfolio of projects and across all relevant network interfaces.  

What you’ll be doing

Leading and managing a group of professional Design and Senior Design engineers for the engineering Design Delivery for Protection and Control for the HVDC converter station and its interfaces.

Assess engineering documentation, feasibility and compliance with client requirements and support the preparation of accurate budgets for new projects.

Responsible for preparing basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs for Substation Protection and Control systems.

Responsible for overseeing technical assessment of tender submissions and reporting recommendations.

Define Protection and Control apparatus requirements for input to System Construction Authorisation (SCA), Project Technical Specifications and BETTA documentation.

Co-ordinate the preparation/Review of substation protection and control drawings and specifications for construction/procurement. Control of correspondence and drawings to be issued to the Project Development and Delivery Teams.

Ensure all substation designs and equipment are in accordance with current legislation, policies and operational requirements.

Provide technical support to the Project Development and Project Delivery teams on matters concerning the design, construction and operation of power systems substations and associated equipment

Delegate the technical resolution of site/ construction main plant issues

Lead and contribute to training needs assessment for new products or similar and the development and delivery of technical, operational and safety packages for such products.

Support Protection and Control Section Head in the development of national and international standards or other regulatory matters related to protection and control engineering.

Attend meetings and deputise for the Section Head as required including at senior industry and public consultations.

Act as the key technical interface with EPC and OEM contractors.

Lead on technical initiatives for new engineering opportunities.

The job holder must be able to engage with fellow colleagues and senior managers around the Business and associated corporate functions to ensure that all of these functions are aligned.

What you’ll bring

A degree in Electrical Engineering discipline or equivalent experience, ideally be a Chartered Engineer or working towards to it.

Experience in engineering EPC environments for large strategic electrical infrastructure projects.

Proven experience in design of P&C equipment for HVDC and/ or AC voltages up to 400kV.

Proven Protection, Substation and Network Control, Automation, Telecommunications and Metering Experience 

Ability to manage tasks and make decisions in uncertain and fast paced environment.

Experience in dynamic environments ensuring engineering output delivery.

Excellent presentation and persuasive skills.

Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses.

Knowledge of Transmission Operator Networks health and safety and technical requirements and compliance

Proven experience and knowledge of CDM regulations and Designer risk assessment

Working knowledge or previous experience in use of multi discipline BIM.
