The Opportunity
We believe that a disruptive insurance company must have a principled quantitative framework at its foundation. At Root, we are committed to the rigorous development and effective deployment of modern statistical machine learning methods to problems in the insurance industry.
As a Lead Data Scientist (DS) within Root’s pricing DS team, you will drive the innovation and end-to-end automation of our pricing pipeline, from data creation to model deployment. In this role, you will regularly engage with members of various departments including Product, Actuarial, State Product Management, and Engineering, as well as the executive team. You will influence your team leader to help shape and prioritize the team’s experimentation roadmap, providing domain-wide thought leadership on pricing model innovation, measurement, and best practices. You will proactively identify new opportunities for expansion and optimization, shepherding solutions from R&D into production.
You will lead by example, leveraging your expertise in R (e.g., tidyverse, data.table) and SQL to query, manipulate, and model data effectively. Experience with H2O and advanced modeling techniques is a strong plus. Your leadership will be essential as we expand aggressively into new markets, requiring you to navigate complex, market-specific regulatory environments while maintaining a cohesive pricing framework. This role demands an ownership mentality, with the ability to independently drive work forward, mentor junior team members, and collaborate on large-scale projects using version control tools such as Git. Join us to push traditional boundaries and set the future direction for pricing models in the industry.
Root is a “work where it works best” company, meaning we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US. We will continue to have our headquarters in Columbus to give more flexibility and more choice about how we live and work.
Salary Range: $140,000 - $175,000 (Bonus and LTI Eligible)
