Participants in the KGUN9 Journalism Career Program (JCP) will develop skills to become capable in performing the duties of one or more of the assigned positions below. KGUN9 JCP positions are finite in nature, usually 9-12 months long, but may lead to permanent positions with the station or elsewhere within the Scripps family.

KGUN9 is the Scripps station serving Tucson and southern Arizona. Our team of journalists and media professionals live in a beautiful part of the world and serve diverse communities in both urban and rural areas.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Steadily increasing complexity of tasks can be expected in all 1the below jobs:

  • Report, write, and capture visual content.  Edit and produce stories for multiple platforms on deadline.
  • Assist in coverage of major news events, breaking news and severe weather to ensure high quality consistent community coverage on multiple platforms.
  • Work with news staff to plan, structure, write and report news and information content for various media platforms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Digital Content Producer

  • Produce content for multiple digital platforms, optimizing user experience and paying attention to live web metrics and best practices in user experience. 
  • Apply SEO best practices to every piece of content
  • Enhance the news content with links, maps, slideshows, and other interactive elements.
  • Work with other members of news team to publish content to digital platforms, including video, audio, still photos, and graphics.
  • Build out special sections and site features to enhance coverage and increase user engagement.
  • Assist in the management of user-generated content on the sites. Interact with fans/followers on social media. 
  • Work with other departments, including sales and marketing, as needed on site and station initiatives that require content integration.

Multimedia Journalist 

  • Evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit videos for all platforms.
  • Give live reports from site of event or mobile broadcast unit.
  • Produce news stories for broadcast and digital/social platforms. 
     

News Producer

  • Work closely with news managers and assignment editors and field journalists to determine content needs for daily newscasts.
  • Enhance content of the rundown with graphics, video, research/background information and station branding.
  • Make deadline decisions regarding the newscasts.
  • Responsible for oversight of live broadcast and up to the minute editorial decisions.
  • Edit video. 
  • Develop and post content to station’s digital platforms.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

Education & Experience/Certifications
 

Recent or imminent undergraduate bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related discipline

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:
 

Skills and Abilities: Education & Experience/Certifications
 

Should possess some or all of the following:    

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy including newsroom computer systems
  • Familiar with video editing and editing systems
  • Familiar with journalistic ethics and libel laws.
  • Experience posting content to digital platforms
  • Knowledge of Content Management systems, HTML, Audio Editing, Image Editing, Social Networking
  • Experience with digital video editing
  • Working knowledge of Associated Press style

  

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Office/Newsroom (field work also required for multimedia journalists)
  • May require flexible hours
  • May require lifting up to 40 pounds
  • Valid Driver's License (MMJ only) - Good driving record, and ability to provide proof of insurance with the company required insurance limits.
